Reflecting on The Shift - 1st Corporate Climate Adaptation Conference (Nov 6th) conference in Berlin, I needed a moment to process the wealth of insights gained. It's clear that climate change is a relentless force, its impact only a matter of severity. Humanity's #resilience is being tested against an unprecedented rate of environmental shifts. While Jem Bendell's keynote painted a stark picture, I hold a more optimistic view, though I acknowledge the profound implications that may escape the average person's foresight. Eric White's comparison of today's climate adaptation to the internet of the 90s struck a chord with me. It's a nascent stage where pioneers gather to explore and decode the phenomenon, yet tangible solutions are scarce. This parallel evokes a sense of excitement for the future. The late 90s and early 2000s were a digital frontier, with Napster and ICQ setting the stage for what was to come. Now, as we navigate this new era of climate adaptation, I can't help but wonder about the innovations that will emerge. Just as the internet evolved, so too will our approaches to sustaining our planet. Thank you Daniel Schmitz-Remberg and all #Shifties for your effort, your insight and exchange. Climate change thought of the day... 💭 "Now is better than new, time is more important than tech" Stumbled on this from Jonathan Foley TED talk last night, it's only 10 minutes but worth everyone's time. It's clear and simple messaging; ✅ It is almost entirely about Fossil Fuels GHG emissions ✅ About 96% of what it takes to get to net zero is emission cuts ❗ ✅ About 76% of that, needs to happen in the next decade ❗ ✅ Quicker we act the quicker we reduce the cumulative impact Simple stages through to 2050 in timeline impact; 1️⃣ Emergency Brakes - impact solutions with no delays ⏩ methane leaks, deforestation, energy efficiency, transport, agriculture 2️⃣ Low Carbon Infrastructure - new future standards ⏩ Power systems, building and transport infrastructure 3️⃣ Nature-base Solutions - plant and restore ⏩ Carbon sinks, trees, oceans Carbon capture and removal - a footnote in the story, late to the party for giga-tonne scale and only needed for potentially mopping up at the end. Newsflash - we don't need it if we cut FF emissions in the first place! "More focus, less distraction." "We have lots of cheap solutions that cost less than fossil fuel based solutions and existing destructive agriculture practices." "8-9 million die per year from FF pollution" the health cost-benefit of cutting is enormous Also in there, is a great chart matching; Where we need to cut [science based portfolio] vs Where we are focusing [via IRA funding alignment] vs Where VC is investing [an eye-opener] ❌ Carbon v Capital misalignment is a major challenge. It reframes the simple. We know all this. The scientists can evidence all this. But we still arent getting it right. As always super Ted talk from Jonathan Foley - carbon neutrality will rely at 96% on GHG reduction. Changing our diet and tackling food waste are impactful actions we can take on individual levels. But also Investiments has to target a much wider scope than electrification of vehicles like for instance more sustainable and regenerative agrifood.

I’m pleased to say that the call for full proposals for ARIA’s Exploring Climate Cooling programme is now open until 12:00 noon GMT on 9th December. I’d like to thank everyone who submitted a concept paper to the call in September. There were some truly excellent concept proposals. The effects of triggering a climate tipping point would be catastrophic and global. The only sustainable way to reduce the risk of such tipping events is through decarbonisation, and yet the risk of crossing one or more temperature–induced tipping points in the near future demands that we start now research into approaches that might actively reduce global temperatures in the shorter term to provide a means to potentially avoid tipping points. We’re looking to support researchers around the world to explore the current state of science in this area; identify where the gaps are; understand how a holistic research effort could equip us with critical and currently missing data about cooling approaches; and – crucially – what responsible and effective governance in this arena should look like. Just beyond the halfway mark of the 2030 Agenda, it is evident that we have a considerable journey ahead to achieve our climate goals. But we're not alone: the insights from weather, climate, and water-related sciences provide a foundation for #ClimateAction and show a clear path forward. This unprecedented phenomenon isn’t adequately factored into current climate forecasts #OceanResilience. 🌊🔥 2. Integration Matters: Let’s break down silos! Climate mitigation and adaptation should not be treated as separate entities. Instead, they must intertwine seamlessly. 🌍🤝 🌎Urgent Call to Action: The stakes are high, and we can’t afford complacency. It’s time for bold climate actions—from individuals, organizations, and policymakers alike.
