DETROIT (AP) — Had she wanted to, Michelle Chumley could have afforded a pricey new SUV loaded with options. But when it came time to replace her Chevrolet Blazer SUV, for which she’d paid about $40,000 three years ago, Chumley chose something smaller. And less costly. With her purchase of a Chevrolet Trax compact SUV in June, Chumley joined a rising number of buyers who have made vehicles in the below-average $20,000-to-$30,000 range the fastest-growing segment of the nation’s new-auto market. “I just don’t need that big vehicle and to be paying all of that gas money,” said Chumley, a 56-year-old nurse who lives outside Oxford, Ohio, near Cincinnati. Across the industry, auto analysts say, an “affordability shift” is taking root. The trend is being led by people who feel they can no longer afford a new vehicle that would cost them roughly today’s average selling price of more than $47,000 — a jump of more than 20% from the pre-pandemic average.

EV FLEET REBATES of $5k-$180k in Illinois! ComEd, an energy delivery company serving more than 4 million customers across northern Illinois, has expanded its business and public sector fleet EV rebate program to include certified, pre-owned electric fleet vehicles and repowered battery electric vehicles. Recognizing that the cost of new EVs is still a significant barrier to electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the US, the ComEd Pre-Owned Electric Fleet Vehicle Rebate will help more commercial customers—including businesses of all sizes and public sector customers—qualify for pre-owned electric fleet vehicle purchase rebates from $5,000-$180,000. These rebates will depend on the vehicle class they are purchasing and on whether the customer is located in or primarily serves a low-income or equity-investment eligible community (EIEC). Interesting developments for U.S. airports! The FAA has allocated $186.7 million in grants to 91 airports for infrastructure and other improvements. The top two grants include $61.8 million for Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in Michigan and $23.5 million for San Diego International Airport. Detroit will use the funds to rehabilitate rescue roadways, while San Diego International will finance a new 1.2-million-sq-ft terminal with 30 gates. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act dedicates $25 billion over five years to airport grants, with $14.5 billion marked for the Airport Infrastructure Grant Program. Exciting times ahead for U.S. airport infrastructure development!

Michigan Funding for AAM LANSING, Mich. -- Today, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist announced that four projects will receive $6.25 million in total funding to scale critical AAM infrastructure and deploy pilots that will generate operational data to validate the commercial potential of key AAM use cases and help inform the state’s AAM policy. The funding will be provided through the AAM Activation Fund, a collaborative effort between the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME) and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) which aims to increase coordination across State entities and create a centralized pipeline of projects that can accelerate AAM readiness and growth in the state. The four projects receiving funding include:      BETA Technologies ($2.6 million – Various locations) BETA will install multimodal chargers at Cherry Capital Airport (TVC), Capital Region International Airport (LAN), West Michigan Regional Airport (BIV) and Willow Run Airport (YIP) to create a foundational intrastate charging network to support operations of next generation aircrafts and drive down costs for regional transportation operators.      Michigan Central ($2,450,000 - Detroit) Michigan Central will scale digital and physical infrastructure to expand the capabilities of Advanced Aerial Mobility Region (AAIR) and launch a series of pilots in partnership with Newlab across use cases including building inspection for energy efficiency, middle mile movement of goods between manufacturing facilities, and movement of critical supplies on hospital campuses aimed at generating techno-economic data to accelerate the adoption of beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) UAS operations.       Skyports ($512,168 – Various Locations) Skyports will launch three proofs of concept with commercial partners, starting with ship-to-shore drone delivery services in Sault Ste Marie, MI and Detour Village, MI in partnership with Interlake Steamships, the operator of the largest privately held U.S.-flag fleet on the Great Lakes. The ship-to-shore pilot will validate the potential of drones to be used as an efficient delivery solution that can reduce emissions from anchored vessels and optimize maritime logistics in the Great Lakes.      Traverse Connect ($689,500 – Traverse City and the greater Grand Traverse region) Traverse Connect, in partnership with Munson Healthcare, DroneUp, blueflite, Northwestern Michigan College, Central Michigan University’s Rural Health Equity Institute, and Freshwater Research Innovation Center will test and scale the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for use cases including delivery of medical supplies and other critical healthcare services to improve rural health outcomes.
