The four-hour* workday at the courthouse is a problem. Here's a great article about how court filing counters are still only open from 9-11am, and from 2-4pm for in-person service. This was a pandemic measure put in place in July 2020, and strangely, it is still around four years later. Restricted filing times delay urgent matters. In construction matters, the end result can be delayed closings or delayed financing. For example, let's say there is a lien preventing closing or the release of a financing draw. And let's say you get an urgent court order vacating that lien in the morning. Unless you get to the front of the filing line by 11am, then you're waiting until at least mid-afternoon, at which point it is often too late to complete the rest of the process to remove the lien from title before the 5pm Teraview cutoff. No matter how quickly the judiciary and lawyers work, in those circumstances, the filing counter is the bottleneck. *There may be court staff working in the background outside the four hours of in-person service. That work doesn't solve in-person problems. It is bizarre that we still have pandemic-era restrictions on court services. Whilst the Post Office website trumpets more inaccurate spin claiming it is taking 'extensive action to ensure miscarriages of justice are fully addressed through the Courts and that fair full and final redress is provided', it's true that progress has been made on overturning convictions but that was nothing to do with the Post Office - it was folk like James Arbuthnot and public outrage that led to the long overdue move by Parliament. As for the redress, there's no sign of it and how can the Post Office boast about £43 million pounds paid out to #subpostmasters when it has spent several times that amount on legal fees and when the total bill lia hughesill likely be £2 billion. The compensation schemes are daunting and over complicated, and even worse, claims are still being fought tooth and nail by the Post Office. Where is that new compassionate approach promised by Nick 'Bonusgate' Read? Just get on and get the victims paid - and do it to get impoverished people the help they need, and before many more fall sick and die.
