The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law recently celebrated its third anniversary. Under the law, the U.S. Department of Transportation received $660 billion over five years to improve transportation infrastructure, safety, services and create high-paying jobs for Americans from the most remote, rural towns to the largest urban areas. To date, DOT has announced nearly $570 billion in funding for over 66,000 projects and investments in all 50 states and US territories. Many of those investments are going to improve safety, efficiency, and passenger experience at airports. Building on this incredible momentum, yesterday the Federal Aviation Administration announced an additional $20 million in funding to modernize air traffic control towers owned by airports in small towns and at regional airports. This round of funding will enable projects at 20 airports across the country. The money, FAA officials said, will go toward new construction, renovations and repairs to airport facilities, infrastructure and other expenses. The AIP program doles out more than $3 billion to airports every year. Pennsylvania airports will receive this round's largest award – more than $7 million – via the commonwealth's block grant program. Federal AIP funds are available from the program, according to the state, for general-aviation airports, airports designated as reliever airports and non-primary commercial airline airports – those with less than 10,000 annual enplaned passengers – that are part of the FAA-approved National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. Under the Pennsylvania programs, eligible airport projects can receive up to 95% of their costs

Airports - have you considered applying for grant funding to repair or replace your airport traffic control tower (ATCT)? The FAA published a notice in the Federal Register today announcing the FY25 FAA Contract Tower Competitive Grant Program. The Grant Program is funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021. The announcement provides the following criteria for eligible projects: (1) Airport-owned ATCT projects that sustain, construct, repair, improve, rehabilitate, modernize, replace, or relocate nonapproach control towers. (2) Acquire and install airport traffic control, communications, and related eligible equipment for airport-owned ATCTs. (3) Construct remote towers certified by the FAA, to include acquisition and installation of airport traffic control, communications, and related equipment. Airports are eligible to apply if they are approved in the FAA's Contract Tower Program or Contract Tower Cost Share Program and are eligible for AIP grants. Biden-Harris Administration to invest US$289m in 129 airports The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a seventh round of Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) totaling US$289m to 129 airports across 40 states. The projects are funded under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s AIG program, part of the US$25bn in total funding for airport improvements such as terminal expansions, baggage system upgrades, runway safety enhancements and air traffic infrastructure improvements. FAA’s Airport Terminal Program In addition to the AIG announcement, the FAA has opened the application period for airports to submit projects for the Fiscal Year 2025 Airport Terminal Program (ATP), also funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The FY 2025 ATP provides approximately US$1bn in funding for safe, sustainable and accessible airport terminals, airport-owned airport traffic control towers, and on-airport rail and bus projects that improve multimodal connections.

The funding will support key renovations to the non-secure areas of Terminal 5, including the construction of a pedestrian bridge connecting the terminal to a new parking garage. The grant will also help enclose the terminal’s Airport Transit System platform, expand passenger check-in space, improve circulation in the arrivals and departures areas, and upgrade the security screening checkpoint on the departures level.
