About us
RECIRCULATE is an EU funded project that aims to revolutionize the European battery sector by developing the technologies and systems required to enable cascading reuse of batteries and battery components at their end-of-life. RECIRCULATE envisions a future where batteries have an extended lifespan in second and third-life applications, and are only recycled once their maximum value has been extracted, leading to a more sustainable and resource-efficient battery sector.

Electric vehicle batteries contain various components that can harm the environment if not managed correctly. Due to battery chemicals and electrical charge, the dismantling environment is hazardous. Centria University of Applied Sciences and Probot Oy are working on creating an automated robotic dismantling system within the Recirculate project. Stanford University researchers unveil a groundbreaking technique to improve lithium metal battery performance 🔋🎓 By allowing lithium metal batteries to "rest" in a discharged state, scientists have found a simple yet highly effective way to extend battery lifespan and improve efficiency. The research highlights that even small pauses in battery operation allow the lithium to stabilize, reducing harmful dendrite growth—a common issue in lithium metal batteries. This technique requires no additional costs or materials, making it a game-changer for both sustainability and affordability in energy storage. Stellantis and Factorial Energy are advancing EV technology with the development of FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) solid-state batteries. These batteries offer an energy density exceeding 390 Wh/kg, promising longer driving ranges and enhanced safety compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. FEST technology combines a lithium-metal anode, quasi-solid electrolyte, and a high-capacity cathode. This design merges the performance and safety benefits of solid-state electrolytes with the manufacturability of conventional lithium-ion batteries. A recent study has debunked the myth that EV batteries have a short lifespan 🧐💡 The research indicates that EV batteries can retain about 90% of their initial capacity after six and a half years of use. Factors such as exposure to heat and frequent fast charging were found to contribute more to battery degradation than age or mileage. Notably, vehicles like the Nissan LEAF, which lack active cooling systems, may experience faster battery degradation compared to models equipped with such systems.
