Stellantis and Factorial Energy are advancing EV technology with the development of FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) solid-state batteries. These batteries offer an energy density exceeding 390 Wh/kg, promising longer driving ranges and enhanced safety compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. FEST technology combines a lithium-metal anode, quasi-solid electrolyte, and a high-capacity cathode. Solid-State Batteries Enter Pilot Production 🔋 💬 With some major players in the industry going all in on solid-state batteries, I'm interested to know what my network think - could solid-state redefine the EV and energy storage markets, or is there another technology that you think will be better? TrendForce's latest research shows that solid-state batteries are entering the pilot production phase, with major players like Toyota, Nissan, and Samsung SDI leading the way! By 2027, production is projected to reach GWh levels, meaning significant advancements in battery safety, energy density, and longevity. But it hasn't been a smooth journey for Solid-State batteries so far. High costs and complex production have slowed adoption, especially for full solid-state batteries. However, semi-solid-state batteries—which use a mix of solid and liquid electrolytes—are already powering some EVs and scaling steadily. Solid-State Batteries: Promising, but Still a Decade Away from Mass Adoption There's been a lot of buzz around solid-state batteries for EVs recently, and it's exciting to see the progress being made. The use of silicon as an active material in the anode (similar to StoreDot #xfc) is a particularly promising development. However, as I've maintained, widespread commercial viability is still at least a decade away. While advancements are encouraging, significant hurdles remain, particularly around cost and scaling up production. These challenges need to be overcome before solid-state batteries can become a mainstream solution for electric vehicles. At StoreDot, we believe in providing a realistic roadmap for the industry. What is unique about it? (1) It is the lowest cost silicon technology, because it add silicon inside the pores of graphite anode materials already produced at large scale and low cost by qualified suppliers. The silicon is added using a fast and inexpensive patented catalytic process, reducing waste and time. By comparison, proprietary hard carbon substrates infused with silicon are at least 4 or 5 times more expensive and not yet scaled up to EV quantities. (2) Performance data in EV cell prototypes have proven that higher cell energy density can be achieved with less silicon because the SINANODE processing does not add the unnecessary inactive materials and excess voids found in other technologies. Instead, the anodes can be calendared to EV densities with very low wt. % of inactive materials. We provide EV cell prototypes to customers and partners so that they can verify our data. We do not expect anyone to trust marketing claims. (3) The SINANODE IP portfolio is unrivaled in providing customers and partners the IP Freedom to operate, and supporting the large-scale production by licensing established industrial partners in the EV supply chains.
