  • The Effect of Fouling on the Baffle Spacing of a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Suleyman Demirel University Journal of Natural and Applied Sciences

In this study, shell-side fouling of the shell and tube heat exchanger (STHE) designed for a textile firm was examined. The economic baffle spacing was determined for clean and fouled conditions. The energy and pressure loss analysis was performed using Bell –Deleware method. To predict the fouling thickness (FT), a prototype tube bundle was installed in the chimney of the stenter machine to expose to the exhaust gases. The FT on tubes reached to about 0.5 mm within three months. Fuel saving…

Fuel saving (FS) due to recovered heat and fan power consumption (FPC) due to pressure drop were calculated by assuming that FT varies linearly with time. In the result of the cost analysis, it was seen that economic baffle spacing was affected by R value which is the ratio of unit cost of natural gas to that of electricity but the effect of fouling on the optimum baffle spacing was not significant. Fouling affected optimum baffle spacing when R is greater than 15. In this study optimum baffle spacing was determined as 1.16 m for both fouled and clean condition, because of that R is 3.52 in Turkey at the time of the study.

  • The effect of the heat recovery on fuel consumption in the stenter machine

    Journal of Thermal Science

In this study, the convective drying process on the stenter machine used natural gas as fuel was examined in terms of energy saving. The fuel consumption in the drying process of wool fabric with and without heat recovery from exhaust air of stenter was determined. It was shown that the fuel consumption in stenter can be decreased significantly by the use of heat recovery exchangers. According to the results minimum fuel consumption was observed at inlet drying air temperature of 180°C and…

The fuel consumption in the drying process of wool fabric with and without heat recovery from exhaust air of stenter was determined. It was shown that the fuel consumption in stenter can be decreased significantly by the use of heat recovery exchangers. According to the results minimum fuel consumption was observed at inlet drying air temperature of 180°C and humidity ratio of the exhaust air of 0,08 kgv/kga. In this condition fuel consumption decreased from 205.3 m3/h to 177.3 m3/h by using heat recovery exchanger. The fuel consumption of drying systems reduced by 13.6%.

  • Investigation of effect on loss of strength and elasticity of different pump rpm in wool fiber dyeing

    International Journal of Research

After dyeing, the fiber undergoes some strength and elasticity loss due to pressure, temperature and chemical exposure. This leads to difficult progress of the fiber along the production line and decrease in yarn quality in the yarn production stages. In this study; The loss of strength and elasticity after dyeing, the penetration of the dyebath into the fiber at the desired level and the unevenness of dyeing were investigated depending on the pump cycles in the dyeing machine during dyeing of…

This leads to difficult progress of the fiber along the production line and decrease in yarn quality in the yarn production stages. In this study; The loss of strength and elasticity after dyeing, the penetration of the dyebath into the fiber at the desired level and the unevenness of dyeing were investigated depending on the pump cycles in the dyeing machine during dyeing of the wool fiber. In addition, the change in dyebath pressures and velocities were investigated in the dyeing machine according to the pump cycles in the fiber dyeing machine by performing dyebath flow analysis with the ANSYS program using CFD (Calculated Fluid Dynamics) method. It was seen that the increase of the pump revolution increased the loss of strength and elasticity of the fiber but did not affect the homogeneity due to the pressure difference in the inner tank of the dyeing machine.

  • Improving the nepp problem by developing a combing hub on the combing machine in the production of kamgarn yarn

    International Journal of Research

In the yarn production, the combing process is very important in order to make the fibers parallel, clean and prevent the problem of nepp which adversely affects the quality of yarn and fabric. In this study; a new combing hub has been developed which improves the number of nepp errors after combing, spinning and winding(bobbining) processes as a result of making the combing process more efficient on the combing machine. In this study; a new combing hub has been developed which improves the number of nepp errors after combing, spinning and winding(bobbining) processes as a result of making the combing process more efficient on the combing machine. Improvement of yarn quality due to decrease of yarn nepp amount and reduction of work load due to nepp cleaning process on the fabric as a result of increase of fabric quality are among the most important contributions of the work done.

  • Energy and economical analysis of heat recovery exchanger design for stenter machine

    TTMD

The temperature of the air used for drying and fixing purposes in convection stenter machines is between 140-180°C. The air taken from the factory environment is heated to this temperature by burning natural gas. The air at an average temperature of 150°C from the drying process is thrown out of the chimney. By using this waste hot moist air, it is possible to heat the cold air entering the dryer and thereby save the amount of natural gas consumed. In this study, a shell-pipe heat recovery…

By using this waste hot moist air, it is possible to heat the cold air entering the dryer and thereby save the amount of natural gas consumed. In this study, a shell-pipe heat recovery exchanger was designed to save energy from flue gas taken from a double layer convection stenter machine used in a textile factory. The logarithmic mean temperature difference method is used to find the air outlet temperatures and the Bell-Deleware method is used to calculate the shell side pressure loss. The baffle spacing, which affects both the outlet temperatures and pressure loss, has been determined by economic analysis. Using the present time evaluation method, the return time for different baffle spacing was calculated and the appropriate baffle spacing was found to be 0.775 m.

  • Investigation of static electricity amount of wool and wool blend fibers depending on machine speed and fiber blend

    Journal of Textiles and Engineer

Fibre-fibre and fibre-metal frictions lead to static electricity on 100% wool and wool blended fibres during the yarn production due to the triboelectric charging. In this study, the variation of the static electricity deposited on the fibre while moving on the fibre drawing machine, depending on the machine speed and the blend mixture, was examined. Static electricity of 100% wool, 45/55% wool/polyester, 90/10% wool/nylon blended fibres which were finish oiled during the process, was measured…

In this study, the variation of the static electricity deposited on the fibre while moving on the fibre drawing machine, depending on the machine speed and the blend mixture, was examined. Static electricity of 100% wool, 45/55% wool/polyester, 90/10% wool/nylon blended fibres which were finish oiled during the process, was measured on drawing frame. Measurements were made for 3 different speeds of the frame. Static electricity was calculated by surface charge density measurement method. It was determined that fibres which cause an increase in the ratio of waste due to the wrapping problem to the cylinders of drawing machines, have higher amount of static electricity in the yarn production
