Demand for Intermediate-level Software Developers is decreasing, resulting in salary levels on offer declining. For the time being it appears that the days of intermediate developers securing 15% - 20% pay increases when moving jobs are over.   Current advertised salaries for software developers in the UK (3 months to June 2024) are down to 2019 levels.   Is this trend mirrored elsewhere in the world? With Rust growing into more tech stacks, companies are now considering senior developers with ZERO Rust experience but already confident in languages like C++ or Go — as long as you’re genuinely interested in learning of course! 🚀 Great way to demonstrate your interest and (importantly to the company) that you can pick up new things quickly could be GitHub contributions! Many companies are interested in seeing some ‘proof-of-work’ instead of long, drawn-out live coding sessions. A few weeks ago I spoke with a CTO that had been looking for an Embedded Software Engineer for 4 months. 🧐 They had tried to advertise the position on multiple channels -> 100+ applications -> 3 interviews -> 0 hires. 😶 They had tried to work with three recruitment agencies -> 13 CVs received -> 3 interviews -> 0 hires. 😑 Yesterday afternoon the only candidate I submitted, was hired. 😶‍🌫️ What was the difference? A 30 minutes long scheduled and prepared discovery meeting vs "I don't have time for a call" given to the other agencies. ✅ After the meeting, I understood the company, their mission, their culture and what type of candidate would fit perfectly in their team. 😊 This allowed me to present the company as if it was my own, while the other agencies only knew what keywords to put into LinkedIn recruiter. 😎 If you "spray and pray" your vacancy to recruiters, they will "spray and pray" it to the market and will then "spray and pray" you with irrelevant or mediocre CVs. 😑 Minimising communication will not save you any time. ✅ Instead, choose a niche recruiter specialised in what you're hiring for -> set up a discovery call -> and be positively surprised. Doing any salary planning for next year? We'll have our full salary guide dropping in Jan 2025, but here's a very quick overview of what we've seen these past few months... Salaries for high performing Software Engineers have grown LOTS this year. To give you some quick ranges... Our Mid-level placements since July have secured $150K-$160K. Mid-Snrs have been $160K-$170K. Seniors have been $173K-$198K, but the majority have been $180K-$190K. Staff has been $200K-$215K, and Principal has been $220K-$240K. All of these are PLUS super, and almost all had either equity or a bonus on-top. To add to that... Demand for Juniors is still on the floor (+ I've been told my multiple people that the quality is beyond awful. I expect this will cause huge issues next year). Demand from startups for people without startup exposure is also non-existent. Demand for 'Leads' is still pretty low. It's coming back, but I would describe it as "Staff who leads", i.e, almost entirely hands on, and some leading. True Team Lead roles are very rare and quite badly paid (often less than Snr). What’s the JavaScript market like?? Is a question asked on pretty much every call I have at the moment. ✅ The JavaScript market is slowly bouncing back. We’ve seen an increase in job flow, also in direct adverts from both agency and client side which is great ( mostly on perm ). An uptick in perm roles is usually a good indicator of a strong market and contract will soon be to follow. Candidates are getting involved in multiple processes at once. ✅ Time to hire still seems slow. Interviews are taking longer and feedback is delayed. Clients are saying they are wanting to hire but wont move promptly on signing things off/starting the processes or making offers. ✅ There are more experienced candidates on the market. A lot of contracts weren’t extended so there are more people looking. ✅ Seasoned contractors are more open to taking an interesting perm role. In short, things are slowly but surely improving. Here's a small but useful piece of advice for people looking for jobs on LinkedIn… Did you know that you can write boolean in the search bar? 👀 This is particularly useful if your role has alternative titles (e.g. Software Engineer / Software Developer / Mobile Developer / Mobile Engineer). LinkedIn Jobs will search every advert's 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (not title) for whatever you write in the search bar. You can use modifiers like AND, OR, NOT, and add parentheses to adjust your search. And you can use quotation marks if you're looking for a specific phrase. For example… 👉🏼 (software OR mobile OR flutter) AND (engineer OR developer OR architect) NOT iOS 👈🏼 Will produce a list of job adverts that contain Software Engineer, Software Developer, Software Architect, Mobile Engineer, Mobile Developer, Mobile Architect, Flutter Engineer, Flutter Developer, Flutter Architect in the description, but don't mention iOS. This should save you a lot of time because you won't have to run a different search for every possible job title and scroll through duplicates. Did you find this helpful?
