After a few tougher months the architecture market seems to be back to being more candidate than client led – Great news! 🎉 Technicians and Technologists in particular are massively in demand right now and I have 8 practices currently looking for people to join them who have that specific skill set. However, with this turn in the market comes new challenges – everyone is looking for the same people and the fact is technologists just now have multiple options and practices who would love to have them join! So what are you doing to stand out as the option they should pick?? 🤔 Here's the five things I’d recommend focusing on if I were hiring for Technologists just now... ⭐ Identify the profile of person you want to hire and build a package of benefits that will excite THAT profile and not the mass market. Looking for someone to work on Passivhaus projects? Think about what sustainability focused benefits they would want. If you’re working on listed buildings what about considering incentives to work towards conservation accreditation? Make the benefits fit the person you want! ⭐ Have a Flexible, Transparent and Impactful unique selling point – what makes you different to your competitor who is also interviewing the same person? ⭐ Implement high impact, low cost benefits. Everyone offers great projects, hybrid etc. What can you offer that will be really impactful? ⭐ Act quickly! I can’t stress how important this is just now. If you don’t interview and offer quickly the candidate will be gone. ⭐ Be agile at interview. Time, locations, process. Achieve what you want to achieve but don't create barriers to getting a result. What other things would you add which are important to consider when hiring for people with a unique and in demand skill set?

Don’t wait until Christmas to secure your contractors for the new year... If you're a manager or director and you know you’ll need your contractors moving into 2025, now’s the time to secure those extensions (sometimes, even now, it might be too late). Keep your best people - The best contractors won’t wait around. They're approached several times a week for project opportunities. Lock them in early before someone else does. Also, getting these extensions sorted earlier means easier budget planning for the new year and prevents the momentum you have worked hard to achieve going into the Christmas period from stalling. Act now, avoid the headache later.

Getting the best from your Recruiters 🤑   After hearing horror stories of clients going through ups and downs of using agencies to fill their roles, I thought I would share some tips to make sure you get the best out of your recruiters;   👨‍🚀Specialist Areas - Using recruiters who specialise in the areas you are hiring for increases your chances on finding the right profile. They will have a better understanding of the role and a greater network of profiles ready to share. ⏲ Timeslots - Using recruiters is supposed to save you the aggravation of looking for profiles, book in timeslots for Job qualification, CV/ Interview feedback. It saves a lot of time and means you won't be bothered by unneeded phone calls 🕵‍♂️ Market Information - We speak with hundreds of clients and candidates within the same area and hear about all types of different projects. If you're looking for a tip when building a book of contractors then build out your candidate base first before reaching out to clients. It seems obvious, but often all focus is given to winning clients first and then scrambling to find a candidate to fill the role you've picked up. Obviously without a client there is no placement, but without a candidate you're essentially a business with no product to sell. If you're expanding into a new market, spend the first 2-3 weeks exclusively speaking to candidates. You will leave those few weeks with... ⭐A top and extensive candidate pool ⭐A deep understanding of the trends and history of your target sector ⭐Names of companies and hiring managers your candidates have worked with in the past (Your first port of call for BD!) ⭐Candidate referrals which are warm intros to talent no one else may know ⭐An immediate pool which you can source from when you do start picking up roles from your BD If you're looking at building a US contract book then PGC Group have you covered, myself or any of our amazing team are here to help talk you through how to access the world's biggest and most profitable contract market!

Worried that your CV isn't being seen? 🧐 If you feel your CV/resume is going into a "blackhole", there's a very simple way to find out if your document is "searchable" Recruitment consultants/talent acquisition and HR teams use an ATS/CRM system to be able to search through large amounts of data in order to find your profile/CV/resume. If your CV/resume is in an unsearchable format, the unfortunate outcome is that you won't be contacted for future vacancies that you're suitable for. Here's out to rectify this.... 1. Copy/Control+C/Command+C the content of your document 2. Paste/Control+V/Command+V the copied text into a blank document. 3. Do the words in your document read correctly? If "yes" ✅ You're all good, you will appear in recruitment consultants/talent acquisition and HR teams will be able to search on your details. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬? You're probably aware that your technical knowledge is a key factor in interviews. But, an equally important (and often overlooked) is your ability to solve problems and sell solutions to clients. It's not just about knowing your stuff in your engineering discipline, it's about applying it in a practical, effective way. A wee bit of advice is to know your CV inside out, and pay special attention to those key projects, the ones where you had to think outside the box to come up with a clever solution. The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action & Result) is a handy framework to follow when discussing these projects. Doing this will allow you to paint a clear picture of how you've tackled problems in the past. If you can do it convincingly in the interview, you'll have them believing you can do the same in front of clients. So, think about your key achievements, make sure they align with your CV and be ready to articulate them during the interviews. Best of luck.
