No more uncertainty on Mandatory Climate Reporting in Australia - key developments this week: 🌱The bill amending the Corporations Act passed the Senate on 22 August and is on track to come into effect on 1 January 2025. 🌱The AASB released the new draft standards on 20 August which are now referred to as AASB S1 and AASB S2 (rather than ASRS1 and 2). These standards will provide the market with the information it’s been asking for to be able to compare and contrast how companies are taking action on climate.

Some excellent discussion & insights about the roles and opportunities of #communityengagement during today’s IAP2’s session on “Groundbreakers and Transparency Makers: the role of Engagement in ESG”, following the launch of their corresponding report. One of the main points was that engagement can often get pigeon-holed as an ‘S’ in ESG consideration, but it is actually relevant across the E, S, & the G. At the same time, engagement with communities is also not the only thing in the ‘S’ component - with social impact & social performance a much broader consideration. IMO, and in terms of social performance on infrastructure & energy projects, community engagement functions are the most likely resourcing place for driving better social outcomes on projects in the future. The reason I say this is that engagement roles and functions are relatively common now (and budgeted for), whereas it is still an anomaly to see social impact specialists on projects in Australia, beyond contributing a section to an EIS/IA approval. It’s quite rare to see a Social Impact or Social Outcomes badged role during construction or in the operational team. Instead, the “social” scope often is assumed to be in the engagement function. (NB Internationally, I’ve observed it’s a somewhat different story though and arguably the other way around with often more social specialists and less engagement/comms functions). Community engagement professionals bring very useful skills that are needed for current transformational sector challenges like the energy transition, and especially when they have codesign and deliberative engagement experience (and employ these approaches). To be even more effective though, and to truly drive better social impact and community benefits on projects, I feel most community engagement professionals would need to develop , or bring into corresponding project functions, skillsets & knowledge more specific to social impact (such as theory of change, impact measurement, social valuation, community benefit sharing models, place-making, social risk assessment, social safeguarding & community development) As said by Donna Groves during the session, “if we are going to say we will genuinely engage, we should genuinely engage” 👏 I’ll extend onto this…. if projects & organisations are going to say they are genuinely trying to create positive social impact and community benefits, they also should genuinely do it. That takes engagement skills + social impact skills. There is no doubt (good) engagement amd social impact practice is needed more than ever in the Australian infrastructure & energy sectors. Kudos to the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Australasia for their advocacy in this space including with this new paper. Working with other Climate colleagues at Anthesis, specifically Zara Plummer, we have put this piece together on ESRS E1. ESRS E1 is the standard that covers reporting on climate related sustainability activities (as part of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive #CSRD). Within this one standard, so much is covered and with greater detail and rigour than most previous reporting frameworks. Considering the interconnectivity of climate activities, and getting prepared for CSRD ahead of time will be vital.

📢 Regulatory Update: On 7 March 2024, SGX RegCo released a consultation paper seeking public feedback on its enhanced sustainability reporting regime, and with the response paper published on 23 September, the new regulations will apply to ALL listed issuers from 2025. ✨Key Highlights on #CarbonManagement: - From FY 2025, all issuers must disclose Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions, based on the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards (SDS). - From FY 2026, applicable categories of Scope 3 GHG emissions must be disclosed, with a one-year transition relief for Scope 3, prioritizing larger issuers. 💡Insights and Implications: These changes represent a major advancement in corporate transparency, aligning Singapore’s sustainability efforts with global standards. We are delighted to share with you our latest thinking around worker sentiment when it comes to ESG policies and strategies. The study - which includes a survey of close to 5,500 workers across 95 countries - aims to help organisations better understand the perceived value and impact of their ESG strategies on their workforce. This allows companies to help identify whether (and which) ESG strategies and policies are most important and valued by employees. The results show that employees are not sufficiently engaged on sustainability and ESG enough to make positive and meaningful organisational change. However, there is an opportunity for companies to make ESG more central to the employee promise and experience to make it more personal, meaningful and impactful. Malaysia's National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF) implementation is set to commence in 2025.   The implementation of Malaysia's National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF) is slated to commence in 2025. This follows the ACSR's inaugural release of the NSRF, which incorporates the adoption of IFRS S1 and S2 standards and offers reliefs to enable a phased and developmental approach. Embracing a climate-first strategy, Malaysia is bolstered by the PACE -Policy, Assumptions, Calculators, and Education—to support this endeavor..   Malaysia’s adoption of IFRS S1 and S2: Group 1: • Main Market listed issuers (with a market capitalisation of RM2 billion and above) are required to adopt IFRS S1 and S2 for annual reports issued annual reporting periods beginning on or after 31 December 2025.   Group 2: • The remaining Main Market listed issuers are required to adopt IFRS S1 and S2 for annual reports issued annual reporting periods beginning on or after 31 December 2026.   Group 3: • ACE Market listed issuers, and • Non-Listed Companies (“NLCos”) with annual revenue of RM2 billion and above are required to adopt IFRS S1 and S2 for annual reports issued annual reporting periods beginning on or after 31 December 2027.   In conjunction with this, Bursa Malaysia has also released its consultation paper on the proposed amendments to the Main Market listing requirements and ACE Market listing requirements in relation to the NSRF.   With the adoption of the NSRF, reasonable external sustainability assurance for Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions is proposed to commence two years after the adoption of IFRS S1 and S2.z   Link to the NSRF: https://lnkd.in/gTVjNhRu   Link to Bursa Malaysia's Consultation: https://lnkd.in/gMszaKgb Kudos team!! Walking the talk on Climate Finance Was fun to speak to Oriel Morrison of APAC Network at the sidelines of AVPN's Conference 2024. What was the TL;DR? We need increase climate finance by 5x, and direct a greater share of it to Adaptation & Resilience and the Global South. Innovative/Blended finance is key, and to unlock this we need a new public private philanthropic partnership - a PPPP approach. This requires unprecedented collaboration - which is hard...but doable. We are seeing many initiatives, models and vehicles of innovative finance taking shape around the world.
