What kind of men do you want to see? And what kind of man do you want to be? It was an honour joining my colleagues and #DEI experts Karen Lampe and Hilary Richters to the last session of the United Nations Global Compact Peer learning group on #genderequality in The Hague. With a theme session on the role of allyship in making a difference. Apart from sharing best practices with other organizations and learning from each other, the presentation by founder of Emancipator and writer of the book ‘Why #Feminism is good for men’ Jens van Tricht struck me most. A few take-aways: 💡there is no golden bullet or quick fix to create gender equality, but allyship from men will definitely help 💡fix the system, not the woman. Change yourself, others & all relevant structures in society 💡take a first step, and ask others to join 💡be accountable to women’s rights, women’s organizations and the women’s movement, ask questions and be curious 💡how and when can you leverage your privileges to help others that have been and still are less privileged? This fantastic Gillette Campaign as a response to the #MeToo movement has received intense criticism on socials when it came out. But I think it shows the move from ‘the best a man can get’ towards ‘the best a man can be’. It also highlights an important question, especially with #InternationalWomensDay only 2 weeks away: What man do you want to be? Passion meets purpose: Participating in EY’s DE&I coaching program! ✨ For me, it’s not just about expanding my network (even though meeting inspiring people is always a bonus 😊). This program goes hand-in-hand with my personal passion for fostering diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I), especially when it comes to gender equality. EY with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office are finalists in the ‘International’ category of the MCA Awards this year. A £15 million ASEAN Low Carbon Energy Programme, led by EY, promoted Green Finance and Energy Efficiency in Southeast Asia. The firm’s team facilitated sustainable finance infrastructure, trained more than 14,000 participants, and supported over £199 million in green bonds issuance. Despite challenges like COVID-19, the programme made significant climate and gender equality impacts, leaving a lasting legacy discussed at the World Investment Forum 2023. Does Equality Happen By Accident? Obviously not. It has required a lot of work and, unfortunately, many lost lives to get to the point where our society is today, and we have lots more work to do. Here's one of my personal heroes. She's not an activist; she's a researcher who influenced how many companies, such as McKinsey or Credit Suisse, design their organizations & cultures. She's the one behind the business case for DEI! So who is she? Iris Bohnet is a behavioural scientist, professor at Harvard Business School, and one of the most respected people in the DEI & Gender Equality research out there. She wrote one of my favourite books - "What Works - Gender Equality by Design. I read it so many times, it's almost embarrassing. The key takeaways are: ♦︎ our brains are biased and risk-averse, and we cannot control our biases (as they are mostly unconscious) ♦︎ equality & inclusion doesn't happen by accident or through willpower ♦︎ so companies need to actively design policies and systems that encourage behaviours which create equitable and inclusive outcomes for everyone. She follows up with many research-based practical behavioural tips and resources on designing for inclusive and fair behaviours that create fair outcomes. Her work was a cornerstone for me, starting two companies, She Wins and then Fair HQ. So today, I wanted to celebrate Iris's hard work and incredible contribution. It has almost been a year since I completed educational modules and certificates by Leap Africa's leadership accelerator (LAP) programme that aims to develop young women leadership skills. I am actively engaging in projects, campaigns, and conversations that align with the SDGs. Whether it’s advocating for sustainable business practices, promoting gender equality, or championing clean energy, I’m committed to making a tangible difference. I believe that the actions we take today will shape the world of tomorrow. The challenges we face—from climate change to social inequality—are urgent, but they also present an incredible opportunity for innovation and collaboration. The SDGs aren't just for governments or corporations—they are a call to action for each of us. Together, we can accelerate progress and build a world that is sustainable, equitable, and prosperous for all.
