#Cop16 is a chance for leaders to recognise the role that financial institutions play in nature resilience, argue Emma O'Donnell, Dr Jimena Alvarez and Dr Nicola Ranger from the University of Oxford. More than half of the world’s total GDP is at least moderately dependent on nature, they say. Yet, almost US$7tn (£5.4tn) per year is spent by governments and the private sector on subsidies and economic activities that have a negative impact on nature – including intensive agriculture and fossil-fuel subsidies. Yesterday I attended a High-Level Roundtable discussion on Nature Finance at UNFCCC #COP29 in Baku, convened by IUCN President H.E. Razan Al Mubarak in her role as UN Climate Change High Level Champion. The following statement on Climate and Nature Finance entered into the record on behalf of IUCN: "This is a highly important and timely session. In IUCN’s view it is critical that climate and nature finance deliver high-integrity outcomes that contribute to the objectives of all three Rio Conventions. In this regard, climate finance needs to purposefully pursue nature-positive outcomes from the outset – not as an afterthought or only as a safeguard. We must avoid past mistakes of working in silos, where we endeavour to solve one societal challenge while inadvertently creating or exacerbating others in the process. To facilitate this required integration, the ENACT Partnership (Enabling Nature-based Solutions for Accelerated Climate Transformation) was launched at UNFCCC COP27 under the leadership of Egypt and Germany, with IUCN’s support. Eighteen states, five international organisations and one national business federation have joined this partnership to date, helping to mobilise and leverage knowledge, commitment and finance at the national level. In addition, IUCN is promoting the Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions as a high integrity framework to guide both public and private sector investments. For example, we are working with several bilateral development agencies such as Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and multilateral finance institutions such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to design robust pipelines for investments in Nature-based Solutions that deliver for climate, nature and people. Innovation is increasingly characterising the nature and climate finance space. While this is to be welcomed, IUCN believes that innovative finance is not innovative enough if it is not inclusive and equitable. It is vital that global climate and nature financing mechanisms recognise and support the rights and agency of Indigenous Peoples and other local communities by facilitating their direct access to these resources. IUCN is therefore proud to partner with our members from Indigenous Peoples Organisations as well as the Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) in the establishment of the Podong Initiative which aims to mobilise at least US$ 200 million of climate and nature finance for direct access by Indigenous Peoples over the next five years. In this respect, IUCN would like to acknowledge the Government of Canada for their recently announced support to this initiative, helping to make innovative climate and nature finance properly inclusive."

🌿 Finance - the catalyst for a nature-positive future 🌿 Following the COP16 negotiations and the lack of success to align on a global finance roadmap for #nature, Building Bridges 2024 arrives at a pivotal moment. Can finance evolve to support, rather than undermine, the ecosystems all lives depend on? By most measures*, populations of plants and animals are collapsing, and they have been for decades. Coral reefs are disappearing, as are tropical forests. Animals are going extinct. It’s bleak. The Centre for Sustainable Finance and the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) calls for finance that regenerates, moving beyond "business as usual" by embedding the true value of natural capital into investment practices. Shifting away from the $1.8 trillion in harmful subsidies that continue to support unsustainable sectors** is fundamental to narrow the biodiversity finance gap. But many other financial mechanisms must be implemented. Building Bridges is an opportunity to move into practical steps, making finance a catalyst for a sustainable, nature-positive future. 🔗 To prepare for the summit, read the case of the @Cambridge Institute for Sustainability leadership: “Scaling Finance for Nature: Barrier Breakdown” https://lnkd.in/eF3RUqUw Building Bridges 2024 📍Rue de Varembé 17, Geneva, Switzerland 📅10.12.24 to 12.12.24 🎟️Register now to attend : https://lnkd.in/eWvRKjwJ #NaturePositive #FinanceForNature #sustainableinvestment #Biodiversity #finance #NatureIsEveryonesBusiness *https://lnkd.in/dzaVK3Ah ** https://lnkd.in/gJNqvwYJ
