Really want to appreciate the product managers at JioCinema for creating such an intuitive and seamless app interface. It’s one of the hardest things to make something simple yet effective. When you’re doing something for the first time, there’s always a risk of clutter, but they managed to avoid that completely. With no reference points, they had to think of every feature from the ground up, and they nailed it. Great job! Just for reference, before this Auction, audiences were always dependent on third-party forums to keep track of player movements. Having that information in real time during the live auction kept the audience more connected. They could see how their favorite franchises were shaping up, debate if the management should go for the next player in the bidding, or analyze how many other options were still left. This added a whole new layer of engagement, and the team deserves credit for enabling such a dynamic experience! A few more things that could have been better: - Real-time loading of upcoming players: The list of players could have been matched with the auction sequence as the sets were called out, ensuring the data updated in real time. - Categorization by skills: Grouping players by their skills (e.g., bowlers, batters, all-rounders) would have made it easier to navigate. - Filters by skills: Adding filters at the top of the list would have allowed users to quickly check how many batters/bowlers were still available if a franchise decided to skip a specific player. Arjun Vijay Imagine ordering a Dosa Pan at 00:45 AM because your old ones handle broke, or a Mixer Grinder at 6:45 AM when your current one suddenly malfunctions. Picture yourself needing a mosquito bat in a remote Airbnb late at night, or the convenience of having 10kg bags of rice delivered straight to your door without carrying the carts to parking lot neither carrying in lifts, not to mention daily grocery runs and last-minute orders of socks or underwear before heading to outstation. These are all my real experiences, showing how quick commerce is set to completely transform traditional e-commerce. The new era has already begun, and it's just a matter of time before everyone catches up.

Zomato grew at nearly 29% year on year. Meanwhile, Swiggy grew by only 11% year on year. Zomato's Market share also increased to 55% From Marketing to customer service, Zomato seems to have an edge over Swiggy. IPL: Razorpay's Second Innings 🏏 The title "IPL: Razorpay’s second innings" really intrigued me. What does a fintech platform have to do with IPL? 🤔 It turns out, user behavior during an IPL match, like ordering food or gaming, had an indirect impact on Razorpay. In 2019, they struggled with traffic bursts during IPL matches, which lasted over 10 minutes—something their engineering hadn't anticipated. After this challenging IPL season, they strategized to handle future traffic bursts better. Here are the key problems they identified and solved: Problems: 🧵 Thread Exhaustion: PHP Laravel, their backend, lacked proper DB connection pooling, blocking threads and connections when the gateway took longer. 🚦 Throttling: They weren’t throttling requests, making them vulnerable to DDoS attacks. 🏦 Banking Gateway Backpressure: Banking gateways experienced 20x their normal P99s during traffic bursts. 🚥 Smart Routing Requests: There was no way to identify the load on different banking gateway nodes to route requests to less loaded ones. 📊 Alerts & Monitoring: Their alerting mechanism was too slow, giving them no time for remediation. Solutions: 🧵 Thread Exhaustion: They used ProxySQL as a layer between the backend and MySQL, deploying it as a sidecar with each backend pod for fault tolerance. 🚦 Throttling: Implemented simpler fixed window rate limiting instead of the earlier one which was a leaky bucket algorithm implementation backed by a Redis store, also moved this service to an NGINX-based proxy server as a side car with dedicated cache and new rate-limiting configurations (e.g., requests per route per merchant). 🏦 Easing Banking Gateway Backpressure through Smart Routing: Built a machine learning-based system to route transactions smartly, considering earlier payment success/failure events. This improved success rates by 60% during bursts and 4% during normal periods. 📊 Alerts & Monitoring: Using Victoria Metrics and Grafana, they developed a real-time alerting system for business and engineering KPIs. Let's talk about quick deliveries today like Instacart, Blinkit, instamart, Dunzo, Zepto and others. Pros: - You get your essentials in 10 minutes. (that's what they claim but only 5-10% of the time, it's delivered with-in claimed 10 minutes) Cons: - We end up wasting more time than saving time (we started using these apps to save time but that never happened) - You end up spending more than double/triple amount than actually required on essentials because their marketing team is running have some or other offer/discount everyday - You end-up ordering junks more than essentials because you are on their app on daily basis - Social Isolation: Relying heavily on delivery services can lead to decreased social interactions and potential long-term social isolation. - Slowly, your life becomes an unplanned mess. - Making delivery partners anxious, always - Putting delivery partners & others lives on risk who all are on road - Environmental Impact: The increased use of delivery vehicles contributes to pollution and delivery often generates unnecessary packaging waste, adding to the environmental concerns. What we do(for more than a years now): - We order our monthly groceries using Dmart at starting of the month (takes 30 minutes every month) (grocery prices, delivery time & delivery charges are reasonable as compared to any other platform, mall or local shops) - Fruits and dry vegetables on weekly basis from local market (takes 30-45 minutes every week) - Green vegetables once or twice a week (no extra effort) Planning is essential part of our lives and in my opinion we should at least plan for essentials(groceries, fruits & vegetables). Hi Zomato and Swiggy teams, I’m currently traveling from Patna to Pune and wanted to share a small yet impactful observation regarding the food ordering process on your platforms. A few weeks ago, I booked my train ticket, which initially had a waiting list of 80. However, by the time the chart was prepared, my seat was confirmed. Yet, when I went to place an order for food via both the Zomato and Swiggy apps, they still showed the earlier status of my booking as "Waiting List 83," which was no longer accurate. As a software engineer, it seems like an easy win to integrate a feature that checks the real-time status of a passenger’s PNR before allowing them to place an order. This would ensure that users are seeing the correct information, and would also improve the overall user experience. Additionally, it could help avoid confusion when the seat status changes between booking and chart preparation. By reflecting the actual PNR status, you’d be able to create a smoother and more accurate food-ordering experience for train travelers. I hope this feedback proves helpful! I joined Razorpay 5+ years back. If I had to pick one PM skill that has defined how I build things is - truly understanding tech. Swiggy's Policy for Customers :A Double-Edged Sword 1. Poor Quality or Late Delivery: Swiggy places the entire blame on the restaurant/delivery person, leaving customers dissatisfied and potentially out of pocket. 2. Swift Cancellations: Even if a customer cancels an order within 20-30 seconds, they may still be charged a cancellation fee equal to the item price. Unpaid fees can accumulate and impact future orders. Even you email the complaint to their respective support, you will get same reply as this is swiggy policy, so cannot help! My Role in Swiggy's Journey to IPO With India’s leading on-demand food delivery platform, Swiggy became the country’s fastest unicorn in June 2018. I joined the Serviceability team, the core of Swiggy's customer pre-order journey. Our work ensured that any restaurant shown on the app was actually serviceable, factoring in dynamic elements like delivery partner availability, demand fluctuations, and external factors like weather and festivals. With Swiggy's massive scale, each app open triggered serviceability checks for around 2,000–3,000 restaurants, handling up to 100,000 requests per minute at peak. This made serviceability a compute-heavy system, requiring optimizations to accurately calculate distance, time, and delivery service promises. Key Achievements: 1. Caching: Implemented extensive caching for distance calculations, scaling to 200 million requests per minute. 2. Time Prediction Models: Integrated models for assignment, prep, wait, last-mile, and delivery time. 3. System Scaling: Enabled system to handle 100,000 requests per minute within 80ms. 3. Directional GeoFiltering: Replaced Radial GeoFiltering with a rule-based cluster service to improve serviceability accuracy. 4. Debugging Tool: Built a tool for Ops, reducing on-call debugging time by four hours per day and empowering tech support team Working at Swiggy and contributing to its success story as it reached IPO status has been a proud milestone. So I recently downloaded the PhonePe app on my mom’s phone to set up her UPI id. I personally use Google Pay so it was the first time I was using the app. The app reminded me of this super app case study I had done 2 years ago. The home tab navigation has the following options- Loan, Insurance, Wealth. There are a bunch of embedded apps which I can use directly from PhonePe. Hotels opens MakeMyTrip; Trains opens Confirmtkt and so on. I can even order food via an embedded version of Swiggy under the Transit and Food section. I can actually see myself booking hotels from PhonePe instead of using the MakeMyTrip app. Swiggy, I would prefer to open the app natively but things like recharging my metro card are pretty nifty. Coincidently, I also read this Inc42 article on how BharatPe is evolving into a super app. I took all of this as a sign from the universe to repost the super app case study on substack for my 3 subscribers. Why does a possible Amazon Swiggy deal make sense? Earlier this week, Amazon was reported to be in talks to invest in Swiggy or even acquire its instant shopping provider, instamart. Beyond Amazon’s obvious interest in entering the fast-trade segment, the potential deal has several benefits for both companies. Amazon has tried its hand at hyperlocal e-commerce before and failed. Most notably, food delivery was launched in 2020, ending just two years later. Now he has the opportunity to be a part of one of the biggest ultra-local players in India, Swiggy. It also gains a stake in the growing quick commerce market, which has been gradually taking business away from Amazon's traditional e-commerce. For traditional e-commerce companies, switching to hyperlocal service is difficult. It requires a major overhaul of their supply chains and processes. This is especially challenging in Amazon's case. given that much of its technology and processes are replicated in its global business. Also, Swiggy's biggest investor might be looking to reduce its stake to avoid being made a promoter, which could open the door for Amazon to invest. Most importantly, Amazon might find itself perfectly aligned with a company that shares similar values and business practices.
