I come from a Layoff Batch 😞 (Tier-3 College) I didn’t receive a PPO from Amazon. I had to work a 10 AM to 7 PM shift 😬 (not counting the commute time) But despite that I never gave up. My Role in Swiggy's Journey to IPO With India’s leading on-demand food delivery platform, Swiggy became the country’s fastest unicorn in June 2018. I joined the Serviceability team, the core of Swiggy's customer pre-order journey. Our work ensured that any restaurant shown on the app was actually serviceable, factoring in dynamic elements like delivery partner availability, demand fluctuations, and external factors like weather and festivals. With Swiggy's massive scale, each app open triggered serviceability checks for around 2,000–3,000 restaurants, handling up to 100,000 requests per minute at peak. This made serviceability a compute-heavy system, requiring optimizations to accurately calculate distance, time, and delivery service promises. Key Achievements: 1. Caching: Implemented extensive caching for distance calculations, scaling to 200 million requests per minute. 2. Time Prediction Models: Integrated models for assignment, prep, wait, last-mile, and delivery time. 3. System Scaling: Enabled system to handle 100,000 requests per minute within 80ms. 3. Directional GeoFiltering: Replaced Radial GeoFiltering with a rule-based cluster service to improve serviceability accuracy. 4. “My worst technical interview experience” . While trying to switch, I interviewed at Coinbase for the role of SDE 2. Now, let me clarify, the issue wasn’t with Coinbase—it was my incorrect expectations and irrelevant preparation. I assumed it would be a standard DSA round, but it was a Q coding round. I didn’t clarify with the recruiter and wasted time optimizing a straightforward problem. The real test was applying OOP concepts and refactoring. 🔹 Why was this so bad → I could have done well if I had understood the interview expectations and not been stuck in the "Leetcode mindset." 🔹 What I learned → Always clarify what concepts will be tested in the interview and read about others' experiences to prepare. However, finding detailed interview experiences isn’t easy. Many are vague, and don’t cover the specific challenges you face. My Google Interview Experience for SWE II role 💙 ❤️ 💛 💙 💚 ❤️ :  ⏰ The Timeline: 1️) Recruiter email on 15th April 2024 2️) Recruiter call on 18th April 2024 3️) Asked for some prep time (yes, you can do that!) 4️) Mock Interview on 10 May 2024 5️) 3 Coding rounds 6️) 1 Googleyness round 7️) 2 Team match rounds for the same team Based on my profile, the recruiter skipped the phone screen round and moved me directly to the onsite interviews. These onsite rounds are non-eliminatory, meaning I'll receive the results only after completing all of them. 💻 The Onsite Interviews: 1️⃣ Coding round 1: A topological sort problem with an alternative solution using color coding Difficulty: Medium-Hard - I let the interviewer know about both the approaches and  coded the first one but forgot to handle some edge cases. - I then resolved the problem and the interviewer appeared satisfied. - The interviewer then gave me a follow-up for the same question, to which I explained the approach and coded it as well. 2️⃣ Coding round 2: A problem involving Square Root Decomposition. Difficult: Hard -This problem was the most difficult problem among all my rounds. -I solved the problem in 30 mins; I had gotten confused with respect to the time remaining and hence coded it super-fast. -The interviewer then went on to ask me 5 follow-ups for this question. -I was able to solve 4 of them and code them as well. I got stuck in the last follow-up. I was really nervous about the result of this round but later on I got to know it had better feedback than my first round!!. 3️⃣ Coding round 3: Another Graph problem. Difficulty: Hard -This could be solved using a modification of Dijsktra’s algorithm. -The interviewer really checked my thought process and approach in this round and I had only 12 mins to code it up. Overall, it went well and the interviewer seemed very happy with the explanation and code. 4️⃣ Googleyness round: -I was asked 1 behavioural question with multiple follow up questions and different scenarios in each of the follow up. -I had prepared the top 50 questions asked in Interviews for this round. 💃 Result: -My interview feedback was very positive. I had a team match round 4 days after my Googlyness Round.  -I had a Fit Call with my to be manager and I liked the team so I conveyed the same to my recruiter. -Post that I had another fit call with another member of the same team, since this was a new team and they wanted me to meet the Team Lead as well. Once this was done I got my offer letter from Google within 5 days! 🤓 My Experience: The Google interview problems are very unique and they really force one to think out of the box. The whole process was very enriching for me and I had the best experience with the recruiters, interviewers and interview coordinators as well. They were very accommodating and always available!

Famous SDE, EM behavioural question, "how did you work with cross-functional teams" is not about working. It's also not about the tools you use to work together. It is actually about handling vested interests. Why? Before that, lets first understand what is a cross-functional team. These are teams made of people from different functional expertise. For example, Product Manager, Developers, QA, UX, all in one team to solve a business problem. 3-4 developers + 1-2 PM + 2 QA + 1-2 UX Although these individuals are part of this team, but their managers are not same (in most of the cases). Meaning they are still reporting to their managers of their specific functional team. This is where challenges start to show. Each of these have their vested interests. Dev :- Use the latest and shiniest tech QA :- Make the entire product release a bug PM :- Keep squeezing in more and more features UX :- Become the most frustrated user of the product Shouldn't this lead to a better product? No, because while the team is cross-functional, they are only focused on their specific functions, instead of the specific problem because of which they all came together. Cherry on top is their managers are not same. So, how do you handle this situation at work and answer it in interviews. [1] If anyone deviates from original business problem due to their "best functional knowledge", bring them back by going back to business problem. [2] Communicate like you are talking to a 5 year old. Most of the problems start because we assume communication already happened and everyone is aware of the decisions. [3] Keep communication in written, you don't want to hear later, "oh, I meant that..." [4] Give respect to get respect. Escalate about those who keep disrespecting others. [5] If people disagree, understand where they are coming from. Try giving reasoning behind your stand with data. [6] After disagreement if the final decision in not in your favor, don't take it personally. [7] And finally, talk confidently, explain logically. Projects don't fail due to technology, they fail due to people. It gets worse, when people have vested interests with different reporting. If organisations wouldn't have people problem, then many of you and I won't be having the job we have today (we wouldn't need so many people at workforce). That's why behavioural interview are not hypothetical. They extract the best and worst of you from your own stories and serve it in a platter to interviewer. 🚨 WARNING: DTDC is a Fraud! 🚨 I am outraged by my recent experience with DTDC Express Limited. They lost my shipment, which wasn’t even scanned at the entry point. It’s clear that this is not just incompetence, but outright theft. DTDC Courier & Cargo Ltd. staff blatantly asked what was inside my package and then it mysteriously disappeared. DTDC Express Limited is not to be trusted. They don’t just fail to deliver packages—they steal them. Despite multiple complaints, they have shown no responsibility or willingness to address this issue. Their customer service is a joke, and they make no effort to help or compensate for the loss. To everyone: Do NOT use DTDC Express Limited for any shipments. They are running a scam, and you risk losing your valuable items. It’s infuriating that a company can operate with such blatant disregard for their customers. DTDC Express Limited, you need to be held accountable for your fraudulent practices. Ignoring your customers and stealing their packages is beyond unacceptable. If you’ve experienced similar issues with DTDC, please share your stories. Let’s expose this fraud for what it is. Why does a possible Amazon Swiggy deal make sense? Earlier this week, Amazon was reported to be in talks to invest in Swiggy or even acquire its instant shopping provider, instamart. Beyond Amazon’s obvious interest in entering the fast-trade segment, the potential deal has several benefits for both companies. Amazon has tried its hand at hyperlocal e-commerce before and failed. Most notably, food delivery was launched in 2020, ending just two years later. Now he has the opportunity to be a part of one of the biggest ultra-local players in India, Swiggy. It also gains a stake in the growing quick commerce market, which has been gradually taking business away from Amazon's traditional e-commerce. For traditional e-commerce companies, switching to hyperlocal service is difficult. It requires a major overhaul of their supply chains and processes. This is especially challenging in Amazon's case. given that much of its technology and processes are replicated in its global business. Also, Swiggy's biggest investor might be looking to reduce its stake to avoid being made a promoter, which could open the door for Amazon to invest. Most importantly, Amazon might find itself perfectly aligned with a company that shares similar values and business practices. Swiggy uses Language Models to help you find the food you want. 😋 It can even understand complex queries with multiple intents 😦 — here’s how it works: They started with a Small Language Model called "all-mpnet-base-v2" which is fast enough to handle search queries in real-time. They trained the model on past orders, using queries like “healthy juice for summer” matched with items like “sugarcane juice with lemon.” The model improved at understanding food-related language by practicing with scrambled versions of sentences and learning to piece them back together. Then, they created custom query-item pairs, like “gym snacks” with “whey protein bars,” to teach the model what items fit complex queries. These examples were used to train the model to find relevant matches without needing exact keywords. The fine-tuned model accurately matches local favourites to requests, like “Karnataka sweets” with “Mysore Pak,” even when traditional search methods struggled!
