Really want to appreciate the product managers at JioCinema for creating such an intuitive and seamless app interface. It’s one of the hardest things to make something simple yet effective. When you’re doing something for the first time, there’s always a risk of clutter, but they managed to avoid that completely. With no reference points, they had to think of every feature from the ground up, and they nailed it. Great job! Just for reference, before this Auction, audiences were always dependent on third-party forums to keep track of player movements. Having that information in real time during the live auction kept the audience more connected. They could see how their favorite franchises were shaping up, debate if the management should go for the next player in the bidding, or analyze how many other options were still left. This added a whole new layer of engagement, and the team deserves credit for enabling such a dynamic experience! A few more things that could have been better: - Real-time loading of upcoming players: The list of players could have been matched with the auction sequence as the sets were called out, ensuring the data updated in real time. - Categorization by skills: Grouping players by their skills (e.g., bowlers, batters, all-rounders) would have made it easier to navigate. - Filters by skills: Adding filters at the top of the list would have allowed users to quickly check how many batters/bowlers were still available if a franchise decided to skip a specific player. Take-Two Interactive's $460 million purchase of Gearbox Entertainment is a solid move, despite worries about further industry consolidation. Quick thoughts 👇 As one of last remaining independent publishers not owned by a platform holder its success depends squarely on successful releases. Gearbox is a great addition to its existing brand and will resonate with Take-Two’s playerbase. Despite a banner year in 2023, generating $5.3bn in revenues, up from $3.5bn in 2022, Take-Two has taken on more debt (25% debt/capital). Its $13bn purchase of Zynga ran into a softer mobile market and rising costs of user acquisition. Bolstering its traditional core-gamer offering will help offset some of the challenges in mobile. I expect the acquisition to be accretive to Take-Two’s bottom line. Historically, Zelnick’s M&A team emphasizes efficiencies and focus on near-term value add. That fortifies its position in a market where gatekeepers run the show. At $460 million it's a steal. Embracer’s need for cash has forced it to sell assets at much lower valuations. It originally paid $1.3 billion for Gearbox. In the run-up to the sale, Embracer apparently also already performed the bloodletting, laying off a third of Gearbox's studio in the Netherlands, for instance. Take-Two saw a good deal and moved on it. I do not expect Take-Two to increase its forecast because it prefers to underpromise and overdeliver, and has a lot riding on the successful release of Grand Theft Auto 6. 3wOne more thing to add here is the real time experience for the audience when two franchises are bidding for a player. There is always a split screen showing both the teams go at it against each other for a player. They can add the purse left for that particular team and the number of players already bought. This will create an interest in the audience as well for them to visualise their team's position.
