Can someone with no formal media background change the face of rural journalism? In 2002, a dedicated but small group of women, from the rural backgrounds of India came together with a mission. 🎯 A mission to bring a feminist voice to rural journalism and media. Thus, was born Khabar Lahariya — India’s only independent rural media network, run completely by women. Today Khabar Lahariya boasts of a strong digital presence in rural journalism with a YouTube channel with over 500k subscribers and 17k videos posted regularly. 📈 🔴 To learn more about such inspiring women's stories, follow Decoding Draupadi. • Women and self-depreciation — a harmless joke or a reflection of dwindling self-esteem? From quickly shutting down a compliment to joking about oneself, women have been observed to engage in self-depreciative behavior as a method to humble themselves and appear more relatable. But a quick internet search will tell you that self-depreciation is commonly associated with low self-esteem. Many articles and research detail how women turn to self-depreciation to cover up their insecurities and how it can ultimately affect their confidence levels. However, an article by Brittany Chaffee argues that our view of self-depreciation is all wrong. The article published in Wit and Delight talks about how it isn’t always negative and sometimes just a woman’s way of expressing being as comfortable as she is. It also highlights the findings of a Harvard Business Review article which stated that men do not face the same scrutiny as women when they make such jokes in the workplace and in general. These conflicting views leave a paradox before us. If self-depreciation is a reflection of low self-esteem, then why are men and women viewed differently for it? Why is it always assumed that the woman is insecure and not as confident in embracing her imperfections? There are no right or wrong answers here. Each individual’s perspective on self-depreciation is purely subjective. But whether it be a form of insecurity or an expression of comfort, each of these perspectives needs to be validated. What is your perspective on self-depreciation? Is it a negative or positive action for you? • Are expectations overwhelming women? 'We expect this from you.' A phrase that women have heard several times, on countless occasions.   At home, we are expected to be the motherly figure — a dutiful daughter, sister, mother, and wife — caring for others and the house. At work, most women are expected to be likable personalities and to do better but rarely to strive for the top. The society also doesn’t spare women from this hold. Behave, talk, and live in a certain way. On top of it all, there are the pressures we put on ourselves. But what have all these expectations done to us? Has ‘I want to’ been replaced by ‘I need to’? Are we focusing on the goals created by us?  Or the idea that others have for us? Are expectations taking us closer to the goal or away from it? At times, expectations from ourselves and others might push us to do better. But maybe not all expectations need to be met. Sometimes we just need to pause to reflect and make that choice by ourselves. Do you also feel the pressure of expectations in your personal and professional lives? Share your experience below. • Is the average Indian working woman getting enough rest? Working women in India, are just as ambitious and hardworking as anyone else.  But, most often they also juggle the additional responsibility of household chores which increases their overall workload. With work and home, both demanding their time and energy, the question still remains: Are working women in India getting adequate rest? A recent report published by The Hindu sheds some light on this issue. According to the data, professional Indian women work the most number of hours globally. In growing industries like IT, auditing and media some women may even work up to 9-11 hours every day. ⏰ Adding to the challenge, the report also states that the sharing of workload is still not functional in some households. This leaves the women of the household, to take major responsibility of domestic responsibilities alongside their demanding careers. This reveals yet another concerning fact — an average working woman is only getting 7 - 10 hours of rest a day, leaving them with little to no possibilities of time for their well-being. This raises critical questions about lifestyle, health and the need for systemic change in our households. Every individual needs to be appreciated for their efforts, and the working women deserve the same. 👩💼 What are your thoughts on this issue? Share them below. • Is perfectionism slowing our progress? In today’s competitive environment, many women feel overlooked or underappreciated. To counter this, it then becomes an instinct for them to strive for perfectionism to keep themselves one step ahead of all. Be it work or life we don’t settle for anything less than perfect. But what does ‘perfect’ actually mean? 🤷♀️ Is it our key to success? Or is it just an unreasonable standard that we have set for ourselves? In our race to build the perfect life, there’s a lot we fail to see. 💠 Perfection is causing us to be constantly unhappy and unsatisfied with ourselves. 💠Perfection has caused us to doubt our abilities; creating additional stress. 💠 Perfection has ruined our ability to take risks and make mistakes. 💠 Perfection has made us victims of the fear of failure. Perfection has delayed progress. Progress is not an overnight phenomenon. ⌛ It takes days, months, and even years.  Trying to reach there in one go, is not the wisest move. The best way forward is to embrace our imperfections and learn from our mistakes. Being imperfect doesn’t make you mediocre or a failure. It's just a stepping stone on the path to progress. 🚀 Do you also struggle with the same dilemma? Share your thoughts below. Credits: Nina Tresa Alex #perfection #women #progress #career #success
