WOMEN EMPOWERMENT in its TRUE SENSE. Today, in my city of Thiruvanathapuram, the Attukal Pongala festival 9th day unfolded—a remarkable event where over 500,000 women congregated with unwavering devotion. Under the scorching sun, they prepared and offered Pongal, a dish made from rice and jaggery in earthen pots, the concept is considered as the conglomeration of Panchabhutham (5 basic elements). The sheer scale of this gathering spans a 20-kilometer radius across the city. What’s truly extraordinary is that during Attukal Pongala, the entire city opens its doors exclusively to women. Men, though not allowed within the festival grounds, provide unwavering support in the days leading up to the event. This celebration has even secured a #guinnessworldrecord. Attukal Pongala stands as a shining example of women’s empowerment within our patriarchal society. We need more such instances to foster the #holistic growth of our communities. A society or organization that treats its women fairly is not only on the path to true growth but also embodies #compassion, #empathy, and #justice. Years ago, on several auto-rickshaws in my city Mumbai, I saw stickers pasted, that said in Marathi – mulgi shikli, pragati zhaali. Translated, it means when you educate a girl, it leads to society’s progress. Truer words have not been spoken, and seeing this crisp and powerful reminder, my heart was filled with hope. And while a lot has been done and achieved in the area of women’s rights and the general place of women in society, we must also agree that a lot still remains to be done. Lakhs of women especially in rural India still do not have access to basic education and sanitation. They are still miles away from jobs and economic freedom. The danger of going on and on about this is, it will make this feel like a problem that is endless and hopeless, when the truth is that it is NOT. Today, as the world celebrates Human Rights Day and everyone's busy asking the macro questions, as a woman I find myself asking - what is the most basic human right which is also a woman's right? I think it's Happiness with a capital H. How do we make and keep people happy, our women happy? And having worked for years in this field through our endeavor - FEMPOWERMENT, I want to share what my biggest learning has been. At the heart of this matter, lies the absolute, unapologetic realization and the acceptance of one and only one solid fact – WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IS WORLD EMPOWERMENT. If you want to change the world, change the circumstances for women in this world. If you want to make the world a better place, it needs to become better for women in the first place. If you want to ensure Human Rights, ensure Women's Rights. And which is why, my friends, if not only for the women, please...
