IKEM – Institut für Klimaschutz, Energie und Mobilität has just published a nice study on legal implications and complex, evolving regulations around #green #methanol production, in German language though. https://lnkd.in/eHA2-Xzv Key points: 🚢 Regulations mainly derive from European directives and are changing. 🚢 CO2 used for methanol must come from one of five sources: industrial processes, air (DAC), RFNBOs, geological sources, or bioenergy (BECCU). 🚢 CO2 price must be paid unless the CO2 is intended for geological storage. 🚢 Rising CO2 certificate prices could make green fuel production increasingly expensive. 🚢 Exception: CO2 from bioenergy is exempt from emissions trading if the biomass meets sustainability criteria. This complexity and the potential for rising costs highlight the challenges in making green methanol a viable alternative in #shipping. 🌍 Circular Economy in the Material Sector: Insights from pwc’s Latest Study PwC, Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie gGmbH und SDiD recently published an analysis of the maturity level of circular economy in the materials sector which highlights the critical role of the material sector in connection with global greenhouse gas emissions and a growing demand for resources. With over half of all emissions linked to material management, the sector faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices as resource consumption has surged since 1970 (increase from 30 to 106 billion tons per year). 📈 In its report, pwc presents not only fields of action with concrete recommendations for action for companies that can help them to deal with the opportunities of the circular economy but also identifies current trends in the materials sector e.g. the use of renewable raw materials, more efficient recovery technologies, the development of materials with an extended service life and designs that allow products to be easily dismantled. 📊 It is also interesting to note that significantly more German companies have a circular economy department (+45%) and a circular economy strategy (+4%), but German companies publish fewer circular economy targets (-12%) compared to EU companies. In the midst of a potential commodities supercycle, driven by rising copper prices, Enertechnos offers a timely innovation with its Capacitive Transfer System (CTS). This new technology could play a critical role in addressing the challenges posed by the increasing demand for copper.   Copper is indispensable for global electrification efforts, particularly as we transition towards renewable energy sources. Estimates suggest that to move away from fossil fuels, we will need as much copper in the next thirty years as we have used throughout human history. However, the supply of copper is under pressure owing to a lack of new mining investments and to environmental challenges.   CTS provides a smart solution to this issue by using 20% less copper than conventional cables while delivering the same amount of power. This reduction is not just an electrical engineering feat, but a significant stride towards more sustainable and cost-effective power transmission.   Consider these points:   - The global price of copper surged to a two-year high of $10,110 per ton in April 2024, reflecting increased demand and supply constraints. - Investment in new copper mines needs to reach at least $127 billion per year to meet projected demand until 2050, but it was only $104 billion last year. - The environmental and logistical hurdles of opening new mines further exacerbate the supply crunch.   By adopting CTS cables, we can mitigate some of these pressures. The reduced copper requirement means fewer resources are needed, alleviating some of the environmental and economic burdens associated with copper mining. This efficiency also supports the broader goal of decarbonisation by making renewable energy projects more feasible.   As we look to the future, technologies like CTS are essential for sustainable development. They help ensure that we can meet our energy needs while managing the limited copper supply more effectively.

⚡ An important step towards a circular economy in Germany - the #NKWS In a significant move towards a more sustainable future, the German government has unveiled a draft of its National Circular Economy Strategy (Nationale Kreislaufwirtschaftsstrategie =NKWS). This strategy, set to be approved by the cabinet in autumn, aims to halve the country's per capita consumption of raw materials from 16 to 8 tons per year by 2045 while simultaneously increasing the use of secondary raw materials. Our co-founder Matthias Ballweg emphasizes in his guest article for FOCUS online that this step is crucial for two reasons: 1. 📈 A Booming Growth Sector: Circular economy is a rapidly growing field, with the start-up industry in this sector experiencing exceptional growth. Investments in circular economy are not only environmentally beneficial but also financially sound. 2. 🌄 Independence from Resource-Rich Countries: Embracing a circular economy will reduce Germany's reliance on resource-rich countries, particularly those with authoritarian regimes. This will enhance the country's economic independence and resilience in the long term. While the #NKWS contains ambitious targets and forward-thinking ideas, such as reclassifying building materials as non-waste and prioritizing building preservation over demolition, it does not address the potential constraints that stakeholders face. Despite some potential for improvement, the #NKWS represents a significant step in the right direction. As we move towards implementation, it will become increasingly clear that achieving the strategy's goals will require not only embracing new approaches but also shedding outdated ones. Fantastic news from #Germany: The German Government has given the go-ahead for the long-awaited #RawMaterials #Fund with a volume of € 1 billion. The fund, administrated by German government-owned promotional bank KfW, is designed to strategically strenghten Germany's security of supply for Critical Raw Materials. Mining, processing and/or recycling projects in Germany or abroad can benefit from the fund through a range of financing instruments, generally between € 50 million and € 150 million. Important aspect: In addition to financing through loans or similar instruments, the government agreed that the fund also provides the possibility to support projects through #equity #investments. German parliamentary state secretary Dr. Franziska Brantner said in a post on X: "Good news: the raw materials fund is coming! In a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty, it is crucial for Germany to strengthen its resilience in the supply chains of critical raw materials." 30 companies already have signalled interest in the fund - let's see when the first funding decisions will be made public! #criticalminerals #Australia #mining #processing #Lithium #Cobalt #RareEearths

KfW, a German state-owned investment and development bank, has established a raw materials fund on behalf of the German Federal Government to support the sustainable supply of raw materials to the German economy. The fund is aimed at maturing long-term projects, rather than early-stage development projects, in the mining, processing and recycling sectors. Projects can be global however cannot be located in countries subject to sanctions or in countries where the EU’s supply dependency would be further increased. The financing budget for each project will be between €50 million and €150 million and they must contribute to strengthening the German economy through the long-term procurement of critical raw materials, including in processed form. I attended a compelling keynote speech by Peter Drucker Society Europe on the topic "𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧 - 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤?" 💬 The starting point of our discussion was that the #EnergyTransition poses new challenges for location policy. What needs to be done? What needs to be considered? While EFRAGs draft of the #VSME sustainability reporting standard is nearing completion before being handed over to the European Commission, it already shows that many of the demands of Zentralverband des Deutschen Handwerks (ZDH) and SMEunited have been addressed. Double materiality analysis will not be required for SMEs that report voluntarily, and some data points — such as information on work-life balance — that are not demanded by SMEs’ business partners or banks will likely be excluded. In addition, the Policies, Actions and Targets (PAT) Module has been largely abolished in current drafts and partially integrated into the Basic Module. The Business Partner Module will become the Comprehensive Module, and a new Additional Financial Institutions (AFI) Module has been added. This will mostly serve to integrate information related to the future streamlined approach for non-listed SMEs to simplify reporting on their Taxonomy eligible activities that the Platform of Sustainable Finance is working on. However, there is still further need for improvement in order to create a standard that does not overburden SMEs by requiring data that they do not possess or could just obtain at high costs. #CSRD #sustainabilityreporting

These unconventional methods are powerful tools for increasing visibility and bringing important issues into new contexts. 3. The increase in atmospheric CO2 levels have lead to the urgency in acting upon solutions for climate action. With the CO2 emissions being at all time high in the year 2023, a list of industries and countries have their fair share of responsibility over it. Although the 1.5C threshold is keeping the Carbon Budget in check, the natural assets of carbon offsetting and management are also depleting gradually. We identify blockchain-based carbon management platforms to be the future of operational efficiency and mitigating climate impact by corporate giants.
