Did you know that a significant amount of critical mineral production takes place in areas facing heightened human rights risks? As illustrated in our chart, this includes a host of minerals that are vital to green technologies, such as cobalt, copper, graphite, and nickel. This poses a challenge for companies involved in the energy transition, who are having to strike a balance between sourcing critical minerals and complying with an increasingly stringent set of human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) obligations. Find out more about the major themes dominating the human rights risk landscape in 2024 in our latest Trendline insight: https://ow.ly/w4MA50QIRLh #trendline #hredd #humanrights #supplychain #duediligence #esg

Did you know that almost the entire periodic table of elements can be found in coal, so coal, coal by-products, and coal waste can provide the critical minerals and materials used for batteries, wind turbines, semiconductors, electrolyzers, and other technologies needed to reach the nation’s clean energy goals and provide for our national defense. See this coal fact sheet and the fact sheet below. https://lnkd.in/d5fua9PM

🌍 The world is shifting towards clean energy and digital technologies, increasing demand for critical minerals like copper, lithium, and cobalt. This increase in demand offers opportunities but also poses risks, especially for developing countries. The race for these minerals isn't just about economics. It's also about sustainability and ethics. In developing areas, unchecked mining of these minerals can cause environmental harm, health problems, and social inequalities. The International Energy Agency (2021) predicts that the demand for minerals necessary for clean technologies will quadruple by 2040 to meet climate goals. It is vital to balance economic gains with effective governance systems to avoid a potential "new curse of critical minerals." IMPACT is at the forefront of transforming how these natural resources are managed in areas where security and human rights are at risk. By collaborating with local communities, governments, and industry stakeholders, we investigate and develop approaches to improve security, development, and equality. This article by Rabah Arezki and Frederick Van Der Ploeg explores the new curse of critical minerals and what needs to be done to ensure our pursuit of a greener future does not compromise the rights and environments of communities:
