Job summary
The post holder is responsible for participating as part of the team within the Endoscopy Unit. They
will assist in general housekeeping and portering duties as specified below. The main elements of
the role include cleaning, ordering of supplies, minor maintenance of equipment, transporting
patients and equipment to and from the Endoscopy Unit and restocking of areas together with other
specified tasks as directed by the shift leader. The post holder will be required to work closely with
contractors, support services, monitor quality standards, report deficiencies and take appropriate
action. The post holder will ensure the tidiness and appearance of the department is conducive to
good patient care. Patients’ privacy and dignity must be respected at all times.
Portering
Provide the safe escort of patients between the wards and the endoscopy unit.
Transfer patients on chairs, trolleys and beds throughout the hospital.
Prepare individual patients and the environment to ensure effective safe and effective
moving and handling processes.
Adhere to Trust policies, Procedure and Guidelines.
Ensure that the appropriate safety checks are undertaken before the transfer of any patients
to the Endoscopy Unit.
To respect the privacy and dignity of patients and their relatives at all times.
Assist in the transport of specimens, pharmacy orders, medical notes and endoscopy
equipment.
The post holder will be a designated fire warden for the endoscopy unit.
Assist the endoscopy team in preparing the procedure rooms including checking equipment.
Assist with the cleaning and setting up of equipment, procedure rooms and trolleys.
To carry out monitoring of service delivery especially related to cleaning, linen and catering
supplies.
Inform the unit manager and shift coordinator of outcomes of monitoring and ensure action
is taken.
To be actively involved in equipment maintenance, reporting faulty equipment in the
department to the nurse in charge and ensuring appropriate follow up calls are made.
Responsible for ensuring defects and device issues are logged, reported, recorded and
closed down as appropriate.
To monitor and coordinate other ad hoc maintenance. Liaise with support service helpdesk
as required for other services.
Carry out regular monitoring of faults and service monitoring of equipment in accordance
with procedure.
Participate in the daily and weekly safety checks of the department.
Catering
Prepare and serve drinks for patients as appropriate after their procedure.
Ensure adequate supply of catering supplies.
Liaise with procurement officer to ensure adequate levels of stock items are available and
ensure that supplies are appropriately stored.
Perform weekly check of stock levels and expiry dates.
Ensure that the stock is rotated in the storerooms and they are kept tidy at all times.
Ensure that stock deliveries are received and put away in a timely manner.
Infection control
Check and top up soap, gel dispensers and towel holders in all areas on a daily basis.
Adhere to Trust policies, Procedure and Guidelines.
Undertake monthly mattress audit and report and defects to the Unit Manager.
To assist in monitoring and maintaining cleaning standards and infection control standards in
the Endoscopy Unit as appropriate.
Spot cleaning to ensure spillages are dealt with swiftly and efficiently.
To ensure cleanliness of general and specialist equipment e.g. drip stands, infusion pumps,
patient trolleys, bed pan masher etc.
To ensure that the ward is safe and tidy at all times, there must be a high standard of
cleanliness maintained e.g. remove clutter, keep areas tidy, put stores away.
To identify any problems with cleanliness and liaise with the ward manager and shift
coordinator.
General
To receive, welcome and assist patients and visitors to the Unit liaising with other staff as
appropriate.
Respond to requests for general information.
Receive and pass on information to others, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
Encourage completion of FFT cards and patient surveys.
Professional
Be familiar and comply with Trust and Local Endoscopy Policies and Procedures.
Act at all times in a manner which illustrates respect for privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
Exhibit professional behaviour and attitude at all times and demonstrate excellent customer
care skills.
Maintain responsibility for the identification of own continuing educational needs and
development and take part in appraisal.
Maintain competence in resuscitation, moving and handling and fire education .
