Pre-operative Assessment Department

JOB SUMMARY
Assist all members of the pre-operative assessment team
to deliver a high standard of care to patients, working
regularly without direct supervision but with guidance
from a Registered Nurse by preparing patients for
assessment.
To undertake phlebotomy for patients from within the
gynaecology directorate.
Undertake duties to support the efficient organisation of
the Department.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


This Job Outline highlights the main areas of responsibility for the post and is not
exhaustive. It is expected that in line with the development of the Trust, additional

responsibilities that are commensurate to the role will be added to this role outline to
reflect the changing environment of the Trust as an NHS organisation.
Clinical Responsibilities
Following training and demonstration of competency, assist in the assessment
process of patients pre-operatively by undertaking the following
Record and evaluate an ECG at rest within the department and also within
the gynaecology directorate where necessary.
Undertake and record weight, height, vital signs including blood pressure.
Undertake urinalysis including pregnancy testing.
Undertake phlebotomy within the department and also within the
gynaecology directorate where necessary.
Assist with the care of patients within the department.
Participate in the reception, care, transfer and discharge of patients from the
department.
Support Nursing staff by preparing notes for clinic.
Sort through all results received in the department and ensure they are dealt with
appropriately.
Undertake receptionist duties in the absence of the receptionist.
Use computerised systems after receiving appropriate supervised training
Communicate courteously with patients, relatives and visitors
Assist in the development and maintenance of a congenial environment on the
department so as to create an atmosphere to minimise patients anxieties

Ensure all personal practice is carried out in line with infection control policies.

Will work closely with the staff in the department, Gynaecology Matrons, Head of
Nursing and clinicians in embedding the principles of Clinical Governance and
standards for better health in order to maintain/improve and develop high
standards of patient care, and thereby ensure that patients are treated with
privacy, dignity and respect.
Place patient experience at the core of service delivery through implementation
and continued monitoring of essence of care standards, Patient involvement &
experience strategy and patient satisfaction surveys.
Actively promote diversity and equality. Generate and sustain relationships
Keep accurate, adequate and up to date records in accordance with the Trust
policies.

Support the department Manager is maintaining a clean environment in all patient


areas, including undertaking all necessary environmental checks and rules of
infection control are observed.
Assist in ensuring stock levels are maintained in all areas within the department
and stock is stored appropriately.
Assist in the checking of all equipment as required.
Report all accidents and untoward incidents to a qualified member of staff in line
with policy
Comply with Health and Safety policies with particular regard to the rules and
procedures carried out in the event of fire or other emergencies.
Comply with all policies, procedures and guidelines as laid down by the
Birmingham Womens Trust.
Undertake any other reasonable duties, which may be required as delegated by a
qualified nurse, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post,
to meet the needs of the service. This will include cover of appropriate duties
during the absences of colleagues.
Be aware of the need for confidentiality, both with the written and spoken word,
and to ensure that the rights and dignity of patients are protected at all times.
Training and Education
Attend relevant in-service education sessions, Compulsory Training to include:
Hospital Life Support (annual)
Fire Safety Lecture (annual)
Patient Handling
Hand Hygiene and Infection Control
Information Governance
Conflict resolution training
Use of relevant equipment
Attend and contribute to Department meetings regularly
Support the development of Clinical Supervision through participation and
contribution.
Research and Audit
Maintain an awareness of and participate in any clinical audit carried out in the
department

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Health and Safety

legislation and the Trusts Health and Safety Policies. In accordance with sections, 6
and 8 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1964 employees must:
Take reasonable care of their own and others health and safety whilst at

in the interests of health and safety.

Infection Control
The Trust is committed to minimising any risks of healthcare associated infection to
patients, visitors and staff. All employees are required to be familiar with and comply
with Infection Prevention and Control policies relevant to their area of work and must
attend Infection Control training commensurate to their role.
c.
Confidentiality
Personal information relating to patients and staff is confidential and must be treated
as such at all times. It is condition of your employment that you will not use, misuse
or disclose any confidential information obtained during the course of your
employment (except where such disclosure and/or use is authorised by the Trust).
Contravention of this condition will be regarded as a serious disciplinary matter. In
the case of computerised information, contravention could result in a prosecution for
an offence or action for civil damages under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the
Caldecott Guardianship of patient information, and may lead to disciplinary action.
d.
Conflict of Interest
The Trust is responsible for ensuring that the services provided for patients in its
care meet the highest standard. Equally, it is responsible for ensuring that staff do
not abuse their official position for personal gain or to benefit their family and friends.
The Trusts Standing Orders require any officer to declare any interest, direct or
indirect with contracts involving the Trust. Staff are not allowed to further their private
interests in the course of their NHS duties.

NHS Managers Code of Conduct
Members of staff who work in roles that provide leadership and management within
teams, directorates or the Trust as an organisation will be issued with the NHS
Managers Code of Conduct.
