Reflections from COP29: A Step Forward in Climate Action As a proud virtual delegate at COP29 Azerbaijan , I am both inspired and reflective after engaging in sessions that shaped the global climate discourse. This year's conference revolved around pivotal topics, but "Climate Finance" stood out as a game-changer, with new commitments made to ensure equitable transitions for vulnerable nations. Here are my Learnings from COP29: 1. Increased Climate Finance Commitments: Developed countries agreed to increase funding to $150 billion annually by 2030, focusing on loss and damage, adaptation, and capacity building. The establishment of a transparent mechanism for fund allocation was a landmark decision. 2. Global Stocktake Findings: The progress report emphasized the need for urgent action, with a stark warning that the 1.5°C target is at risk unless mitigation strategies are scaled up rapidly. 3. Nature-Based Solutions & Renewable Energy: Investments in reforestation, wetland restoration, and solar energy saw unprecedented global collaboration, with a pledge to double the deployment of renewables by 2028. 4. Youth and Local Action: For the first time, a dedicated youth climate fund was announced to support grassroots climate leaders, aligning perfectly with my mission of empowering lakhs of young climate warriors in India. Our Mission at COP 29: Leading the Global South’s Voice for Climate Justice At COP 29 in Baku, the Climate Hub Forum (CHF) stood as a beacon of advocacy for the Global South, championing the rights of those disproportionately affected by climate change. Representing vulnerable nations and communities, CHF actively participated in high-level meetings, workshops, and collaborative dialogues, emphasizing the urgent need for equity, climate justice, and actionable commitments from global powers. Climate Justice: A Call to Responsibility: Our message was clear: the people and regions that suffer most without contributing significantly to climate change must be at the heart of global decisions. With the Global North responsible for over 75% of historical emissions, it is imperative that they take accountability through fair financing, technology transfers, and transformative policies. Climate justice demands actions that go beyond pledges—rooted in reparations and support for adaptation, resilience, and sustainable development in the Global South. Strategic Collaborations at COP 29: CHF took a leading role in convening critical sessions at the Pakistan Pavilion, fostering dialogues on sustainable development, climate finance, and innovative approaches to climate resilience. Our partnerships with global stakeholders, including Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change, further strengthened these initiatives, demonstrating how collaboration can drive meaningful progress. Imagine this: the world is racing against time, with 86% of the carbon budget for 1.5°C already on track to be consumed by 2030. Yet, hope shines through. India stepped up with a powerful intervention led by Shri Leena Nandan, urging the global community to act decisively and equitably. Here’s what India highlighted that resonates with all of us: 1️⃣ Technology for everyone, not just a few: Think about groundbreaking green innovations. Now imagine if they were accessible to all, without Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) barriers holding them back. I recently completed a course on Energy Economy, Environment, and Policy, at ABDI institute and I’ve been reflecting on the outcomes of COP29 and the ongoing challenges and opportunities in the energy and climate space. COP29 a pivotal summit that brought world leaders together to address the climate crisis, the discussions focused heavily on enhancing climate action, particularly in mitigation, adaptation, and finance. One of the most critical outcomes was the continued commitment to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C but how nations will achieve that remains an open question. Despite progress in some areas, climate financing remains a major gap, while developed nations have pledged funds to support developing countries reaching up to $300 Billion funding by 2035, the reality is that much of the promised finance has been slow to materialize, and the amounts pledged are often insufficient to meet the needs of nations that are already experiencing the impacts of climate change like Chad, Somalia, Pakistan, Nigeria etc. according to IPCC a UN body that assesses climate science and produces consensus based reports for countries. One of the key areas where COP29 discussions highlighted challenges was the relationship between economic growth and climate action. As we look toward the future, there is an increasing need to decouple economic growth from carbon emissions. Countries with high GDPs can afford to invest in cleaner technologies, but the pressure to maintain growth often leads to policies that still prioritize fossil fuels. For emerging economies, the tension is even more pronounced, many developing nations face the dual challenge of achieving economic growth while simultaneously addressing the effects of climate change. As young professionals in the energy sector, we have an opportunity to rethink traditional models of growth. The focus shouldnt be on gathering and discussion but rather action towards achievingclimate goals. Through the course at ABDI Institute, it is imperative for every nation to constantly, assess their energy intensity, security and review policy leading to 4A’S (Adequate and Reliable supply of energy at reasonable price, Availability of needed energy, Acceptability of new and cleaner source of energy, and Affordability). Now is the time to embrace innovation, challenge traditional economic models, and work together driving change in private and prublic sectors. As we reflect on COP29 and look ahead, I’m excited to be part of this journey and looking forward to be actively and physically part of Cop 30 in Brazil.
