📣 Our new report, produced with Expectation State, assesses the state of knowledge on #climate change impacts on #mobility in the Middle East. It provides a foundation for further research to fill evidence gaps for policy and programming.  Key findings include:     🍃 Climate change impacts in the #MiddleEast are threatening livelihoods, undermining local resilience, and worsening socio-economic vulnerabilities. The link between climate change impacts and mobility is complex and context-specific. Climate change often acts as a threat multiplier, intensifying existing pressures like conflict and economic hardship.  🍃 In cases of climate variability and extremes, people across the Middle East often prefer to stay within homes and communities that are often closely knit, unless their livelihoods or safety are jeopardised.    🍃 At a national level, climate adaptation does not appear to score high on Middle Eastern government priority lists - even in more prosperous countries that have the resources to act.  🍃 Limited disaggregated data on climate-related mobility makes it challenging to fully understand the nuanced experiences of different population groups and hinders the development of targeted interventions.  https://lnkd.in/gcUZreCC

However, affected communities are rarely invited to participate in the planning and design of these plans and strategies. According to a UNHCR report launched on Day 2 of #COP29 only approximately 35 percent of the NAPs reported that they conducted consultations. Climate Case Study - #Egypt. Introducing BENAA a #startup from the #GSMAInnovationFund for #ClimateResilience and Adaptation, which is supported by Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Sida. BEBAA's Digital Water and Sanitation Solution (DWSS) is transforming remote rural areas in Egypt with smart, decentralised wastewater treatment. Since receiving the GSMA grant in 2022, BENAA has integrated an IoT system into its wastewater treatment units to monitor water quality. Farmers receive real-time updates on nutrient concentrations via a mobile app. allowing them to optimise fertiliser use. Key outcomes at the end of the grant: • 50.4 million litres of wastewater treated and reused for irrigation • 21,180 people benefited by the waste water treatment units • 2,330 farmers joined BENAA's app-based advisory services. Throughout the last few years, under the flag of the Natural Capital for African Development Finance Initiative (NC4-ADF), various approaches and tools for integrating natural capital into development finance operations have been tested and documented. These efforts have been joined and supported by a range of partner organizations, including the Africa Union Commission (AUC), the MAVA Foundation, GIZ, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF).   There is no doubt that tackling the existential crisis of biodiversity loss and climate change in the world today requires the need to increase protection of, and investment in natural capital. In the last few years, we have seen a growing interest from diverse actors including the finance sector to respond adequately to these crises through the putting in place of interesting initiatives like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD), and the MDB Common Principles for tracking nature-positive finance drawn from the Joint Statement by the Multilateral Development Banks on Nature, People and Planet. 🚀LAND-at-Scale Programme Launch in Egypt With the objective of increasing climate resilience and productivity through land-use consolidation, GIZ Egypt launches the LAND-at-Scale Programme: a participatory land-use consolidation for climate resilience and inclusive business models with the aim to reduce land fragmentation. This approach will increase the productivity and income of smallholder farmers while also strengthening the capacity of key institutions involved in land governance. LAND-at-scale tackles land-use challenges in Egypt by evaluating consolidation tools and business models. The programme focuses on raising awareness and building capacity within communities. Additionally, it pilots new approaches for both crop production and climate adaptation. Furthermore, the programme collaborates with the government to share learnings and influence policy changes, aiming for broader adoption of successful practices. The Participatory Land-Use Consolidation and Climate Resilience for Inclusive Business Models Project is integrated into the Agricultural Innovation Project (AIP), implemented by GIZ Egypt on behalf of the BMZ and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). As a country that is both developing and among the top 5 most climate-affected nations, we have witnessed catastrophic disasters in recent decades, predominantly impacting marginalized communities. The 60th Sessions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Bodies—SB60 (also called the 2024 Bonn Climate Change Conference) 3 to 13 June 2024 The High-Level Champions for Climate Action have recently set out an ambitious agenda for COP29 during the Bonn Climate Change Conference. Held in Bonn, Germany, this event focused on scaling up global efforts to address climate change, emphasizing the urgent need for greater action beyond current policies. Key issues on the agenda include climate finance, advancing progress on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), timely submission of countries’ first Biennial Transparency Reports, work on National Adaptation Plans, and accelerating climate action through a just transition. One of the primary goals is to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, a theme that has been underscored since COP28. This involves not only setting more ambitious emission reduction targets but also ensuring the effective and equitable implementation of the newly established loss and damage fund, which is designed to help vulnerable countries cope with the impacts of climate change​. The agenda also highlights the importance of inclusive engagement. Greater involvement of youth, Indigenous peoples, people living with disabilities, and frontline communities in the climate dialogue is crucial. These groups often bear the brunt of climate impacts, and their participation is essential for equitable and comprehensive climate action. Additionally, the agenda emphasizes the Global Stocktake process, a mechanism under the Paris Agreement for assessing collective progress towards climate goals. The Bonn conference serves as a key milestone in this process, offering an opportunity to review progress and prepare for the final political phase at COP29. This involves assessing gaps in current climate actions and enhancing support and finance for mitigation and adaptation efforts. Therefore, we all need to push for a zero-carbon, resilient world by fostering unprecedented collaboration among various stakeholders, including cities, businesses, regions, and investors. The call for urgent, collective action moves beyond mere pledges, advocating for concrete, actionable plans to address climate change's immediate and long-term threats. As the world prepares for COP29, the agenda set in Bonn serves as a crucial roadmap for each country for accelerating global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate impacts, ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for all​. 🌍 Making Urban Development Climate-Resilient 🌱  With the aim to mainstream urban climate resilience in Egypt, GIZ Egypt in collaboration with a team of international and national consultants just concluded a 2-year engagement with the Urban Development Fund (U.D.F) and the @General Organisation for Physical Planning (GOPP). The partnership resulted in the development of two urban planning and upgrading instruments, which will help GOPP and UDF to identify and address urban climate risks.  First piloted in Alexandria Governorate, both instruments complement each other in assessing climate vulnerabilities on the governorate level while providing guidance for the implementation of local climate adaptation solutions. The two instruments will enable GOPP to develop climate vulnerability profiles for Egypt’s 27 Governorates and will support UDF in building local resilience action plans for its urban upgrading projects.
