🌍 Making Urban Development Climate-Resilient 🌱 With the aim to mainstream urban climate resilience in Egypt, GIZ Egypt in collaboration with a team of international and national consultants just concluded a 2-year engagement with the Urban Development Fund (U.D.F) and the @General Organisation for Physical Planning (GOPP). The partnership resulted in the development of two urban planning and upgrading instruments, which will help GOPP and UDF to identify and address urban climate risks. First piloted in Alexandria Governorate, both instruments complement each other in assessing climate vulnerabilities on the governorate level while providing guidance for the implementation of local climate adaptation solutions. The two instruments will enable GOPP to develop climate vulnerability profiles for Egypt’s 27 Governorates and will support UDF in building local resilience action plans for its urban upgrading projects. The piloting of the two instruments was concluded with a week of training and advisory sessions to equip partners with the skills to use the newly developed climate vulnerability tools. This innovative approach brings climate resilience to the forefront of urban policy making, setting a national precedent in preparing Egyptian cities for future climate risks. 🌍🏙️ The initiative is part of the Capacity Building through Urban Infrastructure Development (CBUID) project, co-funded by the European Union and the German Government. #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #SustainableCities #GIZ #Egypt North South Consultants Exchange Deltares Witteveen+Bos Buro Happold Heba Shoaib

🌍 Mainstreaming Climate Resilience into Strategic Urban Planning to Future-proof Egyptian Cities 🌍 GIZ, in collaboration with Buro Happold, successfully conducted the first training on a newly developed instrument for the assessment of climate risks and vulnerabilities for the technical staff of the General Organisation for Physical Planning (GOPP) on July 22nd and 23rd, 2024. The instrument will enable GOPP to comprehensively analyze how urban areas and their local communities are susceptible to the effects of climate change, and to develop climate vulnerability profiles for Egypt’s 27 Governorates. The instrument’s methodology will inform strategic actions for climate adaptation and disaster-risk reduction, with a focus on vulnerable groups, areas and critical social infrastructure. The goal is to integrate this methodology into the strategic urban planning processes at the Governorate level. This training is a key component of GIZ’s efforts to strengthen institutional and technical capacities at the national level for socially-just and climate-resilient urban development, as part of the Capacity Building through Urban Infrastructure Development (CBUID) Project. Tomorrow at World Urban Forum 12 Egypt World Bank’s City Planning Labs (CPL) together with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) is exploring how spatially informed capital investment prioritization equips cities to make data-driven decisions that meet the demands of rapid urbanization. With two-thirds of the global population expected to live in cities by 2050, and mounting climate pressures, this approach is critical.#ItAllStartsTogether #ItAllStartsLocally #WUF12

🌡 4% of #global #urban #population, say 200 million people, will experience an annual mean temperature #warming of 1.0 to 1.5 °C compared to today already by 2040. Many #cities, including in my own country #Italy, will transition to an arid climate by then, as you see in the map below I created. This is one of the findings I got from querying #Copernicus services, featured in the #WCR (World Cities Report), the flagship report of UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) presented today at the #WUF - World Urban Forum 12 Egypt in #Cairo. I thank the lead author of Chapter 3 in the World Cities Report Michele Melchiorri and the editor Matthijs van Oostrum for giving me this opportunity, with EU Science, Research and Innovation and EU in Emergencies. 📚💡The 4th Capacity Building and Experience Sharing Workshop brought together all five River Basin Organizations (RBOs) and River Basin Councils (RBCs), along with representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MEWR), partners, and experts. 🎯Organized under the UNDP Tajikistan Technical Taskforce for Tajikistan’s Water Sector Reform Project, funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the European Union, the workshop aimed to share best practices from earlier RBOs and enhance understanding of updated legal frameworks, gender considerations, disaster risk reduction, and case studies on water, energy, and ecosystems. 📝Through the project's training, the five RBOs, despite different levels of experience in water and disaster risk management, gained significant knowledge and were brought to the same level of expertise. 🗓️ The event also promoted stronger cooperation between RBOs and RBCs for improved water management in Tajikistan. UNDP, GIZ, and the EU proudly support Tajikistan’s path toward a greener, sustainable future.

🌊 GFA LAUNCHES GIZ PROJECT TO IMPROVE LOW-CARBON URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE IN #UKRAINE 🚰 GFA Consulting Group has launched a major new project under the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Facility Program (#FELICITY II). The 18-month initiative, commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, aims to improve low-carbon, climate-resilient urban infrastructure in Ukraine's water and wastewater sectors. In collaboration with key stakeholders, including municipal and state-owned water and wastewater utilities, the project will focus on preparing bankable infrastructure projects for future financing, in particular from the European Investment Bank (EIB). Given Ukraine's urgent need for investment in water and wastewater services, this project will support the country's efforts to improve water quality, reduce pollution and increase operational efficiency. It will also help Ukraine to meet EU standards in the water sector as it approaches potential #EU membership. Through FELICITY II, GFA will play a crucial role in supporting project promoters and strengthening their capacity to develop sustainable, bankable proposals that have significant greenhouse gas mitigation potential, enhance climate resilience and secure access to international climate finance. This initiative underscores the importance of international cooperation in advancing sustainable development and securing critical funding for Ukraine's urban infrastructure improvements. 💡 More information about the project can be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/eQ9gmgiK #gfagroup Mariia Pavlova #WaterSanitation
