UNICITI’s Post

The cultural dimension of climate change adaptation and mitigation is gaining momentum at the #COP platform. Following the launch of the Group of Friends of Culture-Based Climate Action at the #UNFCCC (#CFCBCA) at #COP28, #COP29 today hosted a Ministerial Dialogue and adopted the Terms of Reference, which will guide the Group’s functioning hence forward. UNICITI Founding Director Olga Chepelianskaia attended the event on behalf of ISOCARP - International Society of City and Regional Planners and here are her key points to retain from the ToR and the Dialogue: * Local and place-based strategies are the first to be listed in the ToR’s Scope of Work when it comes to ‘Harnessing culture for climate adaptation and mitigation’. * Specifics of what these strategies could encompass remain to be defined. Official speeches essentially focused on (certainly most needed) heritage protection. No concrete suggestions on what culture can bring to the adaptation and mitigation table today were brought, except the idea of involving creative arts into delivering powerful climate messages to the public. * The group is open to memberships. Member countries have the voting right. Non-for-profit organisations can join as observers in the capacity of knowledge partners. For us at UNICITI, the adopted ToR can be viewed as a welcome opportunity to shift away from building uniform cities to building cities which reflect their respective unique local context. And, by doing so, are better adapted to climate change and emit less GHG. We will work on making sure this approach becomes part of the local and place based strategies. And what culture inspired strategies do you see as critical to tackle climate change? #ISOCARP #UNICITIofficial #ThirdWayCities #SEHERAsia
