The climate crisis is taking a devastating toll on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with the Caribbean and Latin America enduring nearly $1.3 trillion in economic losses over the last decade. Speaking at COP29, Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke of St. Kitts and Nevis highlighted these alarming figures, underscoring the pressing need for immediate and decisive action. She also called attention to the inequities in climate finance, pointing out that SIDS received just 0.2% of global climate adaptation finance last year. We're dedicated to supporting SIDS like St. Kitts in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. 🌍 Tourism Takes Center Stage at COP29 – Proud to Contribute! 🌱🌍 I’m honored to have been invited by UN Tourism and the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan to participate in the Thematic Day on Tourism at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku. This pivotal event showcased tourism’s role in advancing global climate action and social justice. We tackled the issues, measured the footprint, and defined collaborative decarbonization approaches. ✨ Key Highlights: 1️⃣ Launch of the COP29 Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism Over 50 countries pledged to align tourism policies with national climate goals, driving sustainability. 2️⃣ Strengthening the Glasgow Declaration 58 new signatories committed to decarbonization, regeneration, and collaboration in tourism. 3️⃣ UN Statistical Framework for Measuring Sustainability A breakthrough tool for tracking tourism’s climate impact, helping countries implement data-driven strategies. 4️⃣ Establishing a Global Coordination Mechanism Aligning international efforts for science-based climate actions in tourism. 5️⃣ Strengthening of the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) Recognized as a vital tool for scaling climate finance, supporting nature-based solutions, and delivering social and environmental co-benefits in tourism. ✨ Special Mention: I had the privilege of speaking on the panel “Destinations for Tomorrow: Skills and Sustainability in the Tourism Industry” during the Private Sector Capacities Day at the 6th Capacity-building Hub. Co-organized by the brilliant team at onepoint5, this session was a dynamic platform to discuss the skills required to drive sustainability and tackle tourism’s unique challenges.
