Sustainable Travel International
Environmental Services
Protect and conserve our planet's most vulnerable destinations by transforming tourism's impact on nature and people.
About us
Travel and tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy and while irresponsible and haphazard development can take an enormous toll on the environment and the well-being of local communities, tourism also has potential to generate economic opportunity and provide the incentive for cultural and natural resource protection—particularly in the world’s most vulnerable environmental and social regions. Since 2002, Sustainable Travel International has been working to improve lives and protect places by providing businesses and destinations with the guidance and support they need to plan responsibly for the future. We have found that the best approach to creating long-term sustainability is through empowerment— by providing stakeholders with the direction they need to effectively plan for, manage, monitor and promote their own path to safeguarding their future.

A recent study revealed that over half of protected areas in Southeast Asia have failed to stop deforestation due to a lack of funding for maintenance and enforcement. Tourism revenues and carbon offsets can help bridge the funding and resource gap. The climate crisis is taking a devastating toll on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with the Caribbean and Latin America enduring nearly $1.3 trillion in economic losses over the last decade. Speaking at COP29, Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke of St. Kitts and Nevis highlighted these alarming figures, underscoring the pressing need for immediate and decisive action. She also called attention to the inequities in climate finance, pointing out that SIDS received just 0.2% of global climate adaptation finance last year. We're dedicated to supporting SIDS like St. Kitts in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. We recognize the need for increased climate finance and are committed to helping these nations build resilience and secure a sustainable future. #sustainabletravel #cop29 #stkitts #climateaction #climatefinance #climatejustice

Our CEO Paloma Zapata recently spoke with students at IPAG Business School about the importance of sustainability in tourism. She discussed how our travel choices impact the future of the destinations we love and how travel can be used as a force for good. At Sustainable Travel International, we’re committed to supporting the future of tourism by helping educate the next generation of professionals on sustainability. Their understanding and actions will play a key role in shaping a more responsible industry.
This week, I had the honor of welcoming Paloma Zapata, CEO of Sustainable Travel International into my class at IPAG Business School. Listening to Paloma speak about her work is truly inspiring – it gives you goosebumps. She reminds us that the beautiful places we cherish today could disappear forever if we don’t take action and change the way we consume. Paloma’s talk was a powerful wake-up call: tourism must evolve toward a more ethical and sustainable model. It's time to rethink how we travel and the impact we have on the planet. Thank you, Paloma, for sharing your passion, your vision, and your invaluable insights with us!
