Barcelona has a digital twin thanks to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, a virtual city built from all the available data: census, mobility sensors, telephone and credit card data... everything. A digital twin that as an urban design tool allows future situations to be simulated, impacts to be anticipated, and, consequently, decisions to be taken in a more well-informed way. What happens if a main street is cut off? Should there be more buses if it rains? What are the ideal trees for a public square? How does a green axis affect the price of housing? And what about gentrification in a neighborhood? Big events precise management (like Copa America) is also a big issue. [TOURISM IN BARCELONA] Almost 3,000 people took to streets of #Barcelona this July under the slogan "Enough! Let's put limits on tourism". They demanded a new economic model that would reduce the millions of tourists that visit every year Barcelona. That is a social concern and a global challenge that we, politician, must face with new #solutions. We have worked, among other measures, limiting tourist groups in all city, banning tourist flats and, finally, the increase of tourist tax up to 4 euro/person/night. We also believe #Barcelona must lead the #governance of tourism in #citynetworks and forums worlwide being a reference and learning from other European and world cities which had already faced this global challenge. We want the visited city to be compatible with a livable city. #tourism #cities

VALENCIA (Spain) 🌧️ The Valencia region was worst affected, with many places receiving more than 300 l/m². On 29/30 October, a weather station in Chiva received 491 l/m² in just eight hours - the equivalent of a year's worth of rainfall, according to AEMET - Agencia Estatal de Meteorología. ❓Why is this happening? 🌬️The phenomenon is quite well-known during autumn because lingering warm surface air from summer meets a sudden cold invasion aloft from the polar regions, leading to low-pressure values that persist over a few days and rotate over the concerned region. 🌊 The presence of warm air near the surface, fuelled by excessive moisture from the still-warm Mediterranean Sea, and the instability generated by the conflict with cold air in the upper atmosphere lead to large convective clouds with heavy downpours and sudden flash floods. 🌡️ Climate change is expected to make these systems more intense because of warmer sea waters and increasing moisture in the atmosphere. 🌍 The World Meteorological Organization works with our Members, the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, to ensure timely, accurate forecasts reach people on time. This week, the Autoridad Portuaria de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Puertos de Tenerife actively participated in the Tourism Board organized by the City Council Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de Tenerife Sociedad de Desarrollo de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, SAU . This collaborative space brings together various public and private stakeholders with a common goal: to enhance the tourism quality of our city and optimize the experience for all visitors. During the meeting, each participant shared their current action plans, analyzed areas requiring collaboration, and designed strategies to foster effective synergies. Shared governance is key to projecting the best image of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to the world, making our city a destination that combines excellence and hospitality. For the Port Authority, this commitment is particularly significant given the strategic role played by cruise passengers. As tackling many global challenges must be built on local action, there is growing interest in regional strategic foresight processes. We have been experimenting with a shared visioning approach to regional foresight in the Basque Country over the last three years through an action research project called Euskadi 2040. 📩 The new issue of our monthly international #newsletter focuses on strategic foresight, a crucial aspect for governments to be able to anticipate potential long-term trends or scenarios and to develop policies that contribute to the wellbeing of citizens. 🔹Ane Izulain Alejos presented the Euskadi 2040 initiative as an example of good practice at the Strategic Foresight for Regions event organised by the Flemish region. The aim of the meeting was to bring together experts and policymakers from various European regions to exchange experiences and learnings on strategic foresight. 🔹Euskadi 2040 is a research project that Orkestra is carrying out with the Basque Government to identify the competitiveness challenges of the Basque Country and how they are changing, with the aim of building sustainable and inclusive wellbeing for the next generation. The project has generated a series of lessons that may be relevant for other territories that intend to carry out similar regional foresight processes. 📢 At the International Air Transport Association (IATA), we were glad to support UN Tourism and Igor Stefanovic in developing a comprehensive set of #best practices for accessible #tourism, drawing on established #standards in the field. ✈️ One primary focus of these #practices is #communication, especially in #air travel. When booking their trips, #travellers with disabilities or needing #assistance moving through airports must share their needs with travel agents and airlines. This ensures that passengers' special requests, especially those using #mobility aids, are met, providing a #smoother and more enjoyable #journey. ✈️ The best practices also highlight the need to use the International Air Transport Association (IATA) special service #assistance (#SSR) codes consistently. These #codes help make the process easier for everyone involved by clearly communicating what support passengers need during their flights.
