Our ocean bears the brunt of the plastics pollution crisis, and the impacts are dire. Nearly every day, new evidence rolls in about the threats of ocean plastic pollution—from discarded fishing gear (known as “ghost gear”) to microplastics less than five millimeters in length. Yet, the United Nations global plastic treaty negotiations stalled earlier this month. Instead of a final treaty, countries kicked the can—or rather, the plastic bottle—down the road. "Plastic pollution doesn’t obey geographic boundaries." Ocean Conservancy's Director of Plastics Policy Anja Malawi Brandon, PhD Brandon writes for The Hill on why it's more urgent than ever for countries to come together for a strong, ambitious plastics treaty.

👏 We applaud Senator Welch for the introduction of the Plug Offshore Wells (POW) Act. Thanks to a report this year from the US Government Accountability Office, it is very clear oil and gas operators in the Gulf of Mexico are taking advantage of a weak system and benefiting from a lack of public awareness, when it comes to decommissioning end-of-life infrastructure. Unused, rusting infrastructure in the ocean poses a serious risk to the environment and marine life, and to taxpayers if the government has to pay to clean it up. The Plug Offshore Wells (POW) Act will bring much-needed transparency and accountability to decommissioning, helping to force operators to hold up their end of the bargain. Tell your Members of Congress to support the POW Act and hold offshore oil and gas operators accountable to clean up their mess in the ocean: https://lnkd.in/e_4Ms45d

When an offshore oil and gas operation reaches the end of its productive life, it must be “decommissioned” or cleaned up from the ocean. Decommissioning requires several steps to protect the ocean, marine life and other ocean users. Decommissioning is required BY LAW to be completed by the responsible parties: the oil and gas operators. Yet operators are cheating the system when it comes to decommissioning, which poses serious risks to the environment and to taxpayers. Learn more about gaps and weaknesses of the decommissioning regulatory system in our new report. https://lnkd.in/eiFaPBf7
