Shepherd Center’s Post

Did you know that if it wasn't for Shepherd Center's board members, the #ParalympicGames as we know them may have disappeared? In 1996, when the Olympics were coming to Atlanta, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) decided not to make a bid for the Paralympics. Shepherd Center board members could not just sit by and watch the tradition of the Paralympics being held in conjunction with the Olympics disappear. So our board members stepped right up and threw Shepherd Center's hat into the ring as a founding sponsor of the Games, which began a massive fund-raising campaign that raised tens of millions of dollars. Even the staff members volunteered as judges, and Shepherd Center invited participants to train in Shepherd's pool and weight rooms. Because of the near loss of the 1996 Paralympic Games, the International Olympic Committee now requires cities to bid for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. #Olympics #Paralympics #2024 #AtlantaOlympics #DisabilityPride #DisabilityCommunity #DisabilityRights
