In 2016, while attending Auburn University, Anne Nelson, Shepherd Center alum experienced a life-altering spinal cord injury following a car accident. A lifelong dancer, she initially feared she might never dance again. During her rehabilitation at Shepherd Center, she was introduced to wheelchair dance by a fellow athlete and learned that her passion for movement could still thrive. After completing her rehabilitation at Shepherd, she returned to Auburn, determined to continue pursuing her nursing degree and dance minor. Despite the challenges of adapting to a wheelchair and navigating an accessible but demanding campus, she worked closely with her dance professors to choreograph and perform new works, becoming the first wheelchair dancer at Auburn. Today, she is a full-time nurse in the post-anesthesia care unit at a hospital in Birmingham and a professional dancer with Sanspointe Dance Company. Alongside her work, she has also embraced aerial silks, combining her love of physical expression with therapy. Her journey has come full circle, as she performed for Shepherd Center’s board members, sharing the artistic accomplishments she once feared she might never achieve. Congratulations to former Shepherd Center patient Sachin Chamaria, who made history as the first Indian athlete to win gold in the individual Boccia BC-3 Men's category at the World Boccia Challenger 2024 in Bahrain! Not stopping there, Sachin also became the first Indian athlete to secure medals at two international Boccia events in the same year. Boccia, an adaptive Paralympic sport of skill and strategy, has become Sachin's passion and purpose. This incredible achievement reflects his unwavering determination and drive. After sustaining a spinal cord injury in 2008, Sachin found renewed strength during his rehabilitation at Shepherd Center, where he rediscovered his love for sports through recreational therapy. Those lessons shaped the athlete and advocate he is today, breaking barriers on the global stage.
