THE ERIC LIDDELL 100 TODAY is the day that we have all been waiting for, it is exactly 100 years to the day, 11th July 1924, that Eric Liddell won gold in the 400m race at the Paris Olympics, breaking the World Record in the process. Eric won this race, yet he wasn't even meant to be competing in it. Being a devoted Christian, Eric refused to run his preferred 100m race as it was taking place on a Sunday, and instead opted for the much trickier 400m race, and the rest is history. History that many may be familiar with due to the success of the Oscar-winning film, Chariots of Fire. There is no doubt that this had a massive impact on ensuring that Eric's legacy was secured, but The Eric Liddell 100 initiative was set up to make sure that Eric's story and values were passed on to everyone, including generations to come. By setting up resources relevant to all in order we aim to inspire the next generation and secure, cherish and celebrate the legacy of Eric Liddell. A massive part of being able to do this has been the generosity of everyone who has committed time, money and resources towards The Eric Liddell 100, and there is still time to help. AN INTERESTING PHENOMENON TO RESEARCH ON - EXPLAIN IT! This indeed evokes my passion for #research! I am #curious to find out: "#Who, #how and #why did who #transfer/#transmit what to who"? This poses a big research challenge to be resolved, as one can be very convinced that such key observations cannot simply occur randomly in our world! An observation which might be difficult to explain, but let's, however, take on that challenge of explaining IT! #LionelMessi and #LamineYamal had more to exchange with one another when they first met! How did they do IT?

It's inspiring to witness athletes like #CameronNorrie leading the charge in addressing climate change, ensuring the sustainability of sports in the face of environmental challenges. Additionally, the transition of sports grounds towards implementing carbon sink practices marks a positive shift, demonstrating proactive efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental stewardship. Furthermore, there's an exciting opportunity for corporate sponsorship to align with sustainability goals by supporting sporting initiatives that remove CO2e emissions and provide biodiversity gain associated with sports events. This not only benefits the environment but also enhances the reputation of both the corporations and the sports organizations involved, setting a commendable example for other industries to follow suit in combatting climate change.

Alive and Kicking is a network of impactful organisations that share the same purpose, mission and values. Together we use the lifecycle of a sports ball to grow and strengthen communities around the world. Our balls are created to have a positive social impact in the way they are manufactured, distributed and used. They are based in Africa. More than 40% of people in sub-Saharan Africa live below the poverty line, meaning that their income is less than or equal to $1.90 a day. So the aim is to help those in need.  Through the production of balloons, Alive and Kicking creates ethical jobs for adults from vulnerable groups and gives refugees the means to set up their own micro-enterprises. They also ensure that disadvantaged children have free, easy and safe access to sport through Alive and Kicking's inclusive sport programmes. Thanks to the profits made from the sale of their sports balls and additional fund-raising, they give many young people the chance to play sport. Finally, Alive and Kicking ensures that disadvantaged young people have the tools they need to live happy, healthy lives through Alive and Kicking's innovative health education programmes. Mental health problems are common among young people in the countries where the association works. One child in seven suffers from major psychological problems, particularly depression and anxiety. That's why they train youth workers.  Using their award-winning game-based methodology, education is delivered directly through sports training and is proven to have a positive impact on the knowledge, behaviours and attitudes of those who access it. The Paris Olympics 2024 was a remarkable event, showcasing the spirit of unity, sportsmanship, and global collaboration. From record-breaking performances to unforgettable moments of athletic excellence, it was a true celebration of what we can achieve together. However, we must also talk about a serious issue that came up during the games. There was a reported 30% increase in human trafficking activities, especially in commercial sexual exploitation, during the Olympics. Even with efforts to stop it, traffickers found ways to take advantage of the large crowds and increased demand. At Rahab's Daughters, we were there to protect those most at risk. This experience reminded us of the ongoing need to fight against trafficking, not just during global events but every day. While it’s crucial to stop trafficking, it’s equally important to support those who have been affected—helping them move beyond the trauma and start living a normal life again. In Indiana, we are running a safehouse where survivors can rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
