Planet of the Apps: Innovation in Mobile Healthcare at Risk? 📱 In recent years, Belgium has seen a big increase in the use of mobile health apps. However, while fostering innovation is a core objective of the legal framework for placing medical apps on the market, the opposite seems to be increasingly the case. Overweight is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases in Europe, affecting almost 60% of all adults. Tackling obesity is therefore a key long-term health challenge and is vital to reduce premature mortality. Today, my heart skipped an extra beat at the Sciensano Information Day on the potential of data linkages! 💡✨ The event took me back to my PhD days—10 years ago 😬 —when we celebrated the approval from the Informatieveiligheidscomité for our research under Professor Koen Putman’s guidance. I fondly remember the year of data preparation, manipulation and cleaning with Griet Van Belleghem before we could finally deep dive into analyses. But that experience clearly cemented my appreciation for the secondary use of administrative data. Many fascinating use cases across diverse domains were presented today, showcasing the vast potential of data linkage. However, it’s clear that researchers are still facing many of the same obstacles. Let's support the Belgian Health Data Agency, in collaboration with data partners and other stakeholders, to provide much-needed guidance in the evolving ecosystem. Small sidenote: I clearly do encourage the fact that commercial entities will gain access to health data through the European Health Data Space. It’s important to note this access is limited to clearly regulated purposes only under the EHDS and other familiar regulations. Commercial entities too play a crucial role in driving research and innovation to improve healthcare, and their contributions can’t be overlooked. A big thank you to Sciensano and all contributors for an inspiring day. 🙌📊

📢 New Sciensano Report ! The 2022 National Report on the Point Prevalence Survey of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) and Antimicrobial Use in Belgian Acute Care Hospitals is now available online! 📊🏥 🔍 Key findings: • Participation: 56 hospital sites participated, providing data for over 10,000 patients. • HAIs: 9.2% of patients had at least one HAI on the survey day, higher than the 7.3% recorded in 2017 (but some methodological differences). • Antimicrobial use: 29.3% of patients were receiving at least one antimicrobial agent, slightly higher than 28.1% in 2017. • Top infections: Pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and surgical site infections. • Common pathogens: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella spp. • Top antimicrobial agents: amoxicillin in combination with a beta-lactamase inhibitor, cefazolin, and piperacillin in combination with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. 💡 Why It matters: HAIs and antimicrobial resistance pose significant challenges in healthcare. 🚀 The Health Data Agency and the Implementation of the EHDS We were pleased to have our Leading Official, Kalteen Janssens, represent the Health Data Agency at the event "Implementatie EHDS in Vlaanderen: uitdagingen en opportuniteiten", organized by Departement Economie, Wetenschap en Innovatie (EWI). Her presentation highlighted the agency’s role in implementing the European Health Data Space (EHDS) legislation at the federal level. It also provided an opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities associated with this important transformation in health data ecosystem in Belgium. The Health Data Agency remains committed to: - Supporting a coherent implementation of the EHDS legislation at the national level, - Support the process of FAIRification in the Belgian health data ecosystem. Today EFPIA - European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations published their WAIT-indicator. It measures the number of innovative therapies that are available in Europe and the time it takes to have innovative therapies being reimbursed. The following figures apply for Belgium: - Only 46% of the innovative therapies that received EMA-approval (76/167) are reimbursed in Belgium. This figure deteriorates vis-à-vis last year (51%) and the year before (54%). - Our neighboring countries do better. The Scandinavian countries like Denmark and Sweden, to which we often like to compare ourselves, too. - It takes 565 days to have a drug reimbursed in Belgium, taking into account non-submissions. An analysis by EFPIA and pharma.be shows however that around 70% of the authorized drugs are filed for reimbursement in Belgium, which is similar with other Western European countries and even among the highest in Europe. - Only one third of the orphan drugs that received EMA approval are reimbursed in Belgium. It will be a challenge to increase these percentages in a context of budgetary restrictions, but we will have to do better in the benefit of patients. Transforming Health Care through Patient-Centred Solutions: Key Outcomes from Health Labs4Value's Open Innovation Camps 🧩We are excited to inform you of the significant development of our Health Labs4Value project. Mobility - and more importantly: the place of the car in the public space - was very much at the centre of the debate during the Belgian local elections campaign.   Why? Because greening our mobility and making our public space more sustainable is one of the key challenges in today's day and age, and moreover: because it is an emotional subject.   So instead of focusing on infrastructure, researchers of the #HorizonEurope-funded project Park4SUMP concentrated on parking behaviour to make cities more attractive and safer for citizens through intelligent parking management.   As mentioned in the article by Patrick Auwerx, coordinator of Park4SUMP and project leader at Belgian sustainable mobility NGO Mobiel 21: “In people’s minds, parking is a very emotional subject. 💥📢 Here we go again – EUR 15 Million Funding secured for a new Health R&D Center for our client. This will contribute to build up capacities for future improved patient care in a new European member state, improve cohesion and boost Innovation Scoreboard performance. ⚡️ The results of Teaming Phase II just came in and we are very happy about the outcome - Congrats to the whole consortium and my fellow EY colleagues who worked with me on the proposal. 💎Knock on wood - our success rate remains at 100% with the Teaming instrument under Horizon Europe 🤓Enough EU (l)ingo - what's this all about?  We helped the client to secure EUR 15 million cash grant funding from the Horizon Europe – Widening actions. Under the Teaming for Excellence programme, the focus lies on strengthening the European Research Area through the creation of new or modernised R&D centres in the Widening countries (EU-13 joined after 2004). An international consortium needs to be assembled which assist in the action and offer support with their expertise in the field. It is mandatory that the requested EU funding is complemented by national/regional structural funds. 👩🏼‍🔬 👨🏼‍🔬 The consortium will upgrade an R&D facility in the Health sector which will enhance the quality of life for patients in the particular field, together with generation of new knowledge and development of cutting-edge technologies. The international consortium brings together excellent partners which are leaders in the field and benefitted from previous cooperation, focussing on achieving the impact jointly and with benefits for all partners. 🤹🏻‍♀️What did we bring to the table: \ Experienced multi-country public subsidy team \ Relevant academic degrees (PhD) from the field in the EY team \ Previous successful applications for Teaming \ Experience of being Expert evaluators in Horizon Europe \ EY expertise in business plan creation with blended finance Total budget for the project will be EUR 32 million over 72 months – EUR 15 million being the EU funding contribution.
