Last week we met with members of the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean to learn more about their work in Caribbean water resource management. During our exchange, we discussed an example of just vulnerable the region is due to hurricanes. Islands like Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada depend almost entirely on rainwater harvesting. 91% of households there depend on their own cisterns as their main water storage. The rainwater flows from roofs, down the gutters and is channeled through a filter in a storage tank for later use. Hurricane Beryl destroyed a lot of that infrastructure. So how will they harvest water? #climateresilience #rainwaterharvesting #hurricanes

The growing frequency of climate-related events – from extreme heat to floods and drought – is having a dire impact on people in BC. Communities have told us they need additional funding certainty to address their climate-risk needs, so we’re introducing a new program to help begin to give them reliable, long-term funding to make people and their communities safer https://lnkd.in/gytusxXK

In 2023, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported a staggering 18.4 million hectares of land burned during the wildfire season. The resulting smoke severely impacted air quality in the Pacific Northwest, turning normally sunny mornings gray and issuing warnings for those with respiratory issues. Viridis is committed to helping facility owners and municipalities implement strategic updates to mitigate these devastating environmental challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of their residents. Take a look at Jason Twill, LEED Fellow's take on how Viridis recognizes the urgent need for resilient infrastructure to protect our communities from the increasing threats that natural disasters impose. https://lnkd.in/g3JCTzXB #NaturalDisasters #WildFires #Flooding #Ifrastructure #Resiliency

**From the Latest Security & Resilience Update: Severe Flooding Impacts in Texas** The recent severe weather events in Texas have not only claimed lives but also challenged critical infrastructure systems, including water and wastewater utilities. As reported by WaterISAC, the extensive flooding affected at least 88 counties, with numerous water systems disrupted and boil water notices issued in several communities. Key Highlights: – Widespread Impact: FEMA reports ongoing moderate to major river flooding, with millions still under flood warnings. – Infrastructure Damage: Significant overflows reported at wastewater treatment facilities, including a major incident in Waco, leading to over 3.5 million gallons of overflow. – Community Response: State and local authorities have conducted over 600 rescues, and Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for 91 counties. This event underscores the importance of understanding and preparing for flood risks, especially as climate change intensifies the frequency and severity of such natural disasters. WaterISAC recommends utilities review resources such as the EPA’s "Flood Resilience: A Basic Guide for Water and Wastewater Utilities" to better protect and prepare their infrastructures. Floods prompt Poland’s first-ever state of natural disaster. In response to ongoing major floods in the southwest of the country, Poland has for the first time in history introduced a state of natural disaster Southern Poland has been hit by major flooding, which has so far claimed one life. The prime minister, on a visit to the worst-affected area, appealed to residents to obey evacuation orders. The government has announced that it will declare a state of emergency in response to major flooding that continues to devastate parts of southern Poland. Warsaw has also appealed to the EU for help in dealing with the disaster. #disasters #floods #EU #poland

While preparing a section of a report for a client on the future of disaster philanthropy, and it's growing importance for small to medium sized coastal metro areas, I came across an article in Bloomberg discussing the increasing strain on FEMA due to the rise in climate-related disasters. The insights shared in the article are particularly timely as we navigate the challenges of climate resilience and disaster mitigation. A highlight for me was seeing my own cousin, Sarah Sullivant, quoted in the piece. As a Managing Director at S&P Global Ratings, she succinctly captures the core issue at the federal level: “If FEMA funding doesn’t grow at the same rate of disasters, something is going to give. These disasters are getting more costly. It will require more funding for FEMA. If that funding is not forthcoming, we are talking about long-term state and local governments being on the hook for more.” This statement underscores the urgent need for increased investment in disaster preparedness and resilience. At Shield and Castle Consulting, we specialize in helping public and private sector clients insulate their infrastructures from climate-related disasters and embed sustainability at scale. Our work aims to support businesses and communities in building robust, resilient systems that can withstand the growing threats posed by our changing climate.
