🚨Did you know that wetlands are key before, during and after natural disasters? 1️⃣ Before: wetlands help prevent and prepare for impacts of floods for instance. 2️⃣ During: wetlands can absorb the worst of the shock. 3️⃣ After: wetlands can help people to recover and think of how to “build back better” than before. 📣 To upscale community resilience to disaster risks it is paramount that governments invest in healthy wetlands and the restoration of degraded ones! In 2023, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported a staggering 18.4 million hectares of land burned during the wildfire season. The resulting smoke severely impacted air quality in the Pacific Northwest, turning normally sunny mornings gray and issuing warnings for those with respiratory issues. Viridis is committed to helping facility owners and municipalities implement strategic updates to mitigate these devastating environmental challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of their residents. Take a look at Jason Twill, LEED Fellow's take on how Viridis recognizes the urgent need for resilient infrastructure to protect our communities from the increasing threats that natural disasters impose. https://lnkd.in/g3JCTzXB #NaturalDisasters #WildFires #Flooding #Ifrastructure #Resiliency

FEMA is not a 911 resource. This shouldn’t occur. More municipalities, counties, and states, should invest in ACTUAL emergency/disaster/crisis management programs and resources, and STOP relying on FEMA
As extreme heat and wildfire smoke continue to impact many parts of the country, a multistate coalition of environmental, labor, and health groups has called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to release vital disaster relief funding. FEMA does not classify extreme heat and wildfire smoke as major disasters under the Robert T. Stafford Act. When rivers whisper, listen. When they roar, act The Garonne River was not only a force on June 18, 2013. It was devastation unleashed. Nearly 400 people were forced to flee when torrents rushed across the Pyrenees tore down bridges, isolating villages, and destroyed infrastructure. The twist was that no lives were lost. Not just one. For what purpose? Sensor: early warning systems created by Arantec that day saved lives. These aren’t your everyday gadgets. They forecast floods, considering everything from snowmelt and rainfall to the peculiarities of the terrain. They notify local governments when risk looms so that action can be done before calamity strikes. Fast forward to now, and these tools that save lives are more important than ever. Rising fiercer and less predictable floods are a result of climate change rewriting weather patterns. Our strongest weapon still is prevention, though. Arantec is about building tools that safeguard individuals and communities, not only about innovation. Now, here's a question for you: why isn't every location prone to floods employing the technology we have to save lives? Let's start this dialogue. Share your ideas, tag someone who has to witness this, and help us to advocate better, safer alternatives.

US government urged to declare wildfire smoke and extreme heat major disasters. Fourteen state attorneys general are urging the federal government to declare extreme heat and wildfire smoke major disasters. The petition comes as millions of people in the south and north-east face excessive heat advisories, and large swaths of the western US and Canada battle ongoing wildfires. “The likelihood of high-severity extreme heat and wildfire smoke events is increasing due in part to climate change,” “We urge FEMA to update its regulations to prepare for this hotter, smokier future.” #extremeheat #wildfire #US
