The growing frequency of climate-related events – from extreme heat to floods and drought – is having a dire impact on people in BC. Communities have told us they need additional funding certainty to address their climate-risk needs, so we’re introducing a new program to help begin to give them reliable, long-term funding to make people and their communities safer https://lnkd.in/gytusxXK

After surviving a hurricane double whammy this month, I decided to check the date of the last update FEMA made to our region's flood maps. Even though we did not personally experience flooding in our neighborhood, we had quite a bit of flooding in the surrounding areas. My findings did NOT give me warm and fuzzy feelings. In our case, the last time our map had been updated was in September of 2007 although the maps require review every 5 years. The area's development has significantly evolved since then, leading to fewer spaces for water management and more infrastructure. Unfortunately, this is the information developers and communities have to work with. A 50% chance of being correct and models that are in some cases nearly 20 years old. We must learn to build differently, plan differently and better equip ourselves with accurate information to address the challenges of a swiftly changing climate. #climateadaptation #resilienceplanning #climateresilience Accurate Flood Maps are Essential for Climate Adaptation https://buff.ly/4ffYqUD.

Storm Bert exposes urgent need for flood resilience and coastal adaptation, says Catherine Moncrieff, Policy & Engagement Manager, CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management)... More heavy rain is set to fall in southern England and south Wales this week, adding to the chaos caused by Storm Bert, which has already left homes, roads, and rail networks in disarray. Despite earlier warnings in October from the Environment Agency, urging the public to prepare for floods, the storm’s devastating impact over the weekend claimed at least five lives and exposed serious concerns about the UK’s preparedness for such extreme weather events. Great to see FEMA starting to proactively address the reality of our changing climate. "Under the new rule, the agency will “integrate current and future changes in flooding based on climate science” when it estimates flood risk, factoring in sea level rise and intensified erosion that will get worse over the course of the century." And requiring riverine areas to rebuild above the 500-year floodplain. Bravo! A great step forward, and hopefully not the last. #climatechange #planning #resilience
FEMA's new rule will require infrastructure rebuilt with taxpayer dollars to be safer and stronger against future flooding. This commonsense policy will reduce the costly and dangerous cycle of flood, rebuild, repeat. https://lnkd.in/dZ3nSDGJ

The flood of 1953, while a tragedy, serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing threat posed by rising sea levels and the importance of proactive preparation, especially due to much of Canvey Island sitting below the daily high-water level in the Thames Estuary. It inspires continued efforts to address climate change and design accordingly. 'MicroSuDS' is a finer approach to stormwater management and is gaining traction, Including innovative solutions from GreenBlue Urban including the Hydroplanter Flex which was installed here at Canvey Island. The Station Approach scheme was developed by Morgan Brookes, where flood issues were addressed and approved by Castle Point Borough Council. Consideration of local flood risks, like those on Canvey Island is crucial. Resources like the https://lnkd.in/g9C5zY4t flooding service provides valuable insights for proactive mitigation. Together, with innovative SuDS solutions and strategic planning, we can create resilient and sustainable urban environments. #SuDS #CanveyIsland #CaseStudy #BeforeAndAfter #WoWWednesday https://lnkd.in/gmQ87FJ7

🌧️ Floods in the Valencian Community: Why Rain Became a Catastrophe⚠ In my latest article, I uncover the systemic breakdowns that turned Valencia's recent flash floods into a tragedy. While intense rains played a role, deeper issues like infrastructure gaps, delayed warnings, and a disbanded emergency response unit left communities vulnerable. These floods signal that the Valencian Community’s preparedness is lagging far behind the growing impacts of climate change. 👉Discover the critical vulnerabilities that left the region exposed! https://wp.me/pfZX6o-dP #ClimateChange #FloodPreparedness #DisasterPreparedness #ValencianCommunity #Infrastructure #FloodRiskManagement #EmergencyResponse #UrbanFlooding #WaterManagement #CrisisManagement

In recent weeks, as heavy rains caused widespread flooding across Europe, Vienna has stood out as a shining example of effective urban flood protection. The city's comprehensive #flooddefense system has successfully diverted rising waters and kept many residents safe from harm. Vienna’s infrastructure is a powerful reminder that #strategicplanning and investment in flood defenses are essential as climate change continues to impact weather. A remarkable achievement in protecting both lives and the city's heritage. 📖 Read more here https://lnkd.in/g-B5PaZY #FloodProtection #UrbanResilience #Environmental #Sustainability #Vienna

In 2023, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported a staggering 18.4 million hectares of land burned during the wildfire season. The resulting smoke severely impacted air quality in the Pacific Northwest, turning normally sunny mornings gray and issuing warnings for those with respiratory issues. Viridis is committed to helping facility owners and municipalities implement strategic updates to mitigate these devastating environmental challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of their residents. Take a look at Jason Twill, LEED Fellow's take on how Viridis recognizes the urgent need for resilient infrastructure to protect our communities from the increasing threats that natural disasters impose. https://lnkd.in/g3JCTzXB #NaturalDisasters #WildFires #Flooding #Ifrastructure #Resiliency

With this week's flooding in Houston due to Hurricane Beryl, FEMA's new Federal Flood Risk Management Standard couldn't be more important to preventing loss of life and property. Flooding is becoming more extreme due to the climate crisis - we need to protect our communities and build our schools, hospitals, roads, and infrastructure out of harms way. We also need to address the root cause of the climate crisis by transitioning to a clean energy economy and a zero emissions building sector.

Sea level rise will create a profound shift in coastal flooding, causing tide and storm surge heights to increase and reach further inland. We need to be smart not just about how we build, but how we rebuild after flooding and other climate-driven disasters. Happy to see progress from FEMA this week with their *new* final rule to implement the influential Federal Flood Risk Management Standard, which will now consider climate science when rebuilding after flooding. The new rule will make taxpayer-funded projects far more resilient to flooding, protecting federal investments and reducing the risk of damage and loss from floods. #OceanClimateAction https://lnkd.in/eNnwy_5u
