The growing frequency of climate-related events – from extreme heat to floods and drought – is having a dire impact on people in BC. Communities have told us they need additional funding certainty to address their climate-risk needs, so we’re introducing a new program to help begin to give them reliable, long-term funding to make people and their communities safer https://lnkd.in/gytusxXK

Sea level rise will create a profound shift in coastal flooding, causing tide and storm surge heights to increase and reach further inland. We need to be smart not just about how we build, but how we rebuild after flooding and other climate-driven disasters. Happy to see progress from FEMA this week with their *new* final rule to implement the influential Federal Flood Risk Management Standard, which will now consider climate science when rebuilding after flooding. The new rule will make taxpayer-funded projects far more resilient to flooding, protecting federal investments and reducing the risk of damage and loss from floods. #OceanClimateAction https://lnkd.in/eNnwy_5u

Interesting and useful information in this strategy!
I am happy to announce that the B.C. Flood Strategy was finally released this morning after 2+ years of work with partners from across the Province, First Nations, and local governments, and passionate members of the public. This Strategy is a testament to the people whose lives are changed by floods, and our effort to do better. Thank you to the First Nations ‘sharing the pen’ partners for holding us accountable. The First Nations and local government representatives who showed up to share their aspirations, goals, and interests to advance flood resilience. Please feel free to share on your own social media avenues, let's be proud of this work, noting it’s the start to change, and there’s still lots to do. https://lnkd.in/gDJhx5jZ Check out Tyrone McNeil speaking about the release of the flood strategy: https://lnkd.in/g8XNauSM #NewBCFloodStrategyFullReport #BCFloodResilience #EmergencyManagement #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAdaptation #IntegatedFloodManagementPlanning #WorkingTogether #Salmon #CoBenefits #FoodSecuity #Communities #CoastalFlooding #RevineFlooding #OverlandFlooding #Sendai #CriticalInfrastructure #Salmon #NatureBased #NewBCFloodStrategySummary #BCFloodResilience #EmergencyManagement #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAdaptation #IntegatedFloodManagementPlanning #WorkingTogether #Salmon #CoBenefits #FoodSecuity #Communities #CoastalFlooding #RevineFlooding #OverlandFlooding #Sendai #CriticalInfrastructure #Salmon #NatureBased #Watersheds

The UK government is stepping up its commitment to flood resilience! The UK government's pledge to allocate £25 million toward 40 flood resilience projects promises to present significant change within local communities. We’re fully on board with these innovative approaches that aim to minimise water ingress and reduce property damage in case of flooding. Our team has extensive experience in this critical area, actively engaged in projects spanning across Wales and the UK. Our involvement in the Bath Quays Waterside Project demonstrates our commitment to addressing climate change impacts through flood mitigation and defence strategies along riverbanks, aiming to minimise flood risks while facilitating redevelopment efforts and fostering economic growth. What steps can we take to enhance flood resilience and protect our environment? Share your thoughts below. After surviving a hurricane double whammy this month, I decided to check the date of the last update FEMA made to our region's flood maps. Even though we did not personally experience flooding in our neighborhood, we had quite a bit of flooding in the surrounding areas. My findings did NOT give me warm and fuzzy feelings. In our case, the last time our map had been updated was in September of 2007 although the maps require review every 5 years. The area's development has significantly evolved since then, leading to fewer spaces for water management and more infrastructure. Unfortunately, this is the information developers and communities have to work with. A 50% chance of being correct and models that are in some cases nearly 20 years old. We must learn to build differently, plan differently and better equip ourselves with accurate information to address the challenges of a swiftly changing climate. #climateadaptation #resilienceplanning #climateresilience Accurate Flood Maps are Essential for Climate Adaptation https://buff.ly/4ffYqUD.

Great to see FEMA starting to proactively address the reality of our changing climate. "Under the new rule, the agency will “integrate current and future changes in flooding based on climate science” when it estimates flood risk, factoring in sea level rise and intensified erosion that will get worse over the course of the century." And requiring riverine areas to rebuild above the 500-year floodplain. Bravo! A great step forward, and hopefully not the last. #climatechange #planning #resilience
FEMA's new rule will require infrastructure rebuilt with taxpayer dollars to be safer and stronger against future flooding. This commonsense policy will reduce the costly and dangerous cycle of flood, rebuild, repeat. https://lnkd.in/dZ3nSDGJ

With this week's flooding in Houston due to Hurricane Beryl, FEMA's new Federal Flood Risk Management Standard couldn't be more important to preventing loss of life and property. Flooding is becoming more extreme due to the climate crisis - we need to protect our communities and build our schools, hospitals, roads, and infrastructure out of harms way. We also need to address the root cause of the climate crisis by transitioning to a clean energy economy and a zero emissions building sector.
