The growing frequency of climate-related events – from extreme heat to floods and drought – is having a dire impact on people in BC. Communities have told us they need additional funding certainty to address their climate-risk needs, so we’re introducing a new program to help begin to give them reliable, long-term funding to make people and their communities safer https://lnkd.in/gytusxXK

⚠️ Watershed Conditions Statement - FLOOD OUTLOOK The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises that Environment Canada has released a Special Weather Statement in the Lake Simcoe Watershed. Clusters of severe thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and hail are moving through the Lake Simcoe watershed this afternoon into Sunday. Locally heavy rainfall of 30-50 mm is possible. While widespread flooding is not expected, the possibility for flooding in various low-lying areas of the watershed exists. Watercourses will be flowing higher than normal causing local streams and rivers to become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses. This Watershed Conditions Statement will be in effect through Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Three years on from the November 2021 catastrophic flooding in Whatcom County, WA and the Sumas River floodplain (British Columbia) the discussion continues. I really believe it is the frequency of flooding that motivates people to make changes and investments. Like any other type of human behavior there needs to be some intervention or strong reinforcement to the idea that the status quo is working. The "no action" alternative here is pretty clear, wait and dither and there will be another catastrophic flood event and more disruption, displacement, flood damages, economic loss, livestock and human suffering. So, the question is what is tolerable a flood every 5 years, 10 years, 25-years? If the perception is that suffering is linked to a rare event, it is unlikely any major investments will occur to address the flood risk. https://lnkd.in/dz9SuBEd
