⚠️ Watershed Conditions Statement - FLOOD OUTLOOK The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises that Environment Canada has released a Special Weather Statement in the Lake Simcoe Watershed. Clusters of severe thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and hail are moving through the Lake Simcoe watershed this afternoon into Sunday. Locally heavy rainfall of 30-50 mm is possible. While widespread flooding is not expected, the possibility for flooding in various low-lying areas of the watershed exists. Watercourses will be flowing higher than normal causing local streams and rivers to become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses. This Watershed Conditions Statement will be in effect through Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Can beavers be the answer to the UK's growing flood problem? Flooding is becoming increasingly common, and traditional solutions are expensive and disruptive. But what if the answer lies with nature itself? Beavers, once hunted to extinction in the UK, are being reintroduced and offering a cost-effective, natural way to regulate water flow and reduce flood risk. Heavy rains, devestating floods, severe droughts, heat waves, temperature records and forest fires around Europe🌡🥵😨☔️🔥⏰️🌍💥 We are facing the effects of climate change daily. Neither can we neglect it or avoid it any more - only adapt to some extent if we take the right measures, such as making use of natural water retention. 🌳💧 #climatecrisis #flood #drought #climateadaptation #timeforaction

The real reason behind the Impacts of Extreme Events that are becoming the new normal The impacts of extreme events like Flood,Waterlogging,Landslides etc. are now a regular phenomennon all over the World. Nowadays these events are considered as "certain" rather than "uncertain". Recent disastrous floods in Gilgit Baltistan point out to an immediate need for a detail approach in understanding and dealing with these hazards. Numbers and intensities of floods are increased by climate change, deforestation, and the unavailability of enough infrastructure along with unsustainable land use practices. Rising temperatures have had the influence of fast melting water from glaciers going into rivers, with the consequence being the increased probability of flooding. Also, when trees are cut or removed, that would mean there is no more vegetation to hold the rainwater, which leads to even more runoff. Added to that is the fact that there is an existing bad infrastructure in this region, which experiences extreme weather events, leading to dire consequences. The mitigation of these impacts requires several strategies to be in place. Advanced technologies for weather forecast and prediction of floods should be invested in so as to issue advisories in a timely manner and further enhance community preparedness. Soil conservation and other sustainable land management practices, such as tree planting and proper town planning, also help protect the people against any risk that might occur in the future. Other ways involve installing disease surveillance systems on riverside areas and keeping them free from siltation, as its presence could result in higher penalties imposed by government authorities regulating the same, including law enforcement agencies who are concerned about their habitat. #ClimateChange #Floods #GLOF #GilgitBaltistan

The devastating flash floods seen in south-eastern Spain bring back memories of the 2021 European floods resulting in nearly 250 deaths. The very high death toll rate of over 180 in Germany raised serious concerns in terms of local warning systems and national, state and local communication lines, as the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) had repeatedly warned about the adverse weather system over central Europe at the time. Spain will now need to investigate also what milestones in terms of flood preparedness and advance disaster management have been missed in view of the high death toll. The cost of Spain’s floods is not yet known but can be expected to be in the billions (the 2021 European flood damage was estimated at $46 billions). Unquestionably, climate change is the key contributing factor in these extreme rain events. The Mediterranean has seen the warmest surface water temperature on record with a mean temperature of 28.47°C in mid-August. This facilitates a greater uptake of moisture in the air, resulting in more rain when the atmosphere starts to cool in the autumn. Spain needs to embrace itself for the long journey of recovery.
