**From the Latest Security & Resilience Update: Severe Flooding Impacts in Texas** The recent severe weather events in Texas have not only claimed lives but also challenged critical infrastructure systems, including water and wastewater utilities. As reported by WaterISAC, the extensive flooding affected at least 88 counties, with numerous water systems disrupted and boil water notices issued in several communities. Key Highlights: – Widespread Impact: FEMA reports ongoing moderate to major river flooding, with millions still under flood warnings. – Infrastructure Damage: Significant overflows reported at wastewater treatment facilities, including a major incident in Waco, leading to over 3.5 million gallons of overflow. – Community Response: State and local authorities have conducted over 600 rescues, and Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for 91 counties. This event underscores the importance of understanding and preparing for flood risks, especially as climate change intensifies the frequency and severity of such natural disasters. WaterISAC recommends utilities review resources such as the EPA’s "Flood Resilience: A Basic Guide for Water and Wastewater Utilities" to better protect and prepare their infrastructures. Preventing Floods: The Vital Role of Drainage Maintenance As we head into the rainy season, it's crucial to underscore the importance of drainage maintenance in safeguarding our communities from flooding. Here's why: Protecting Infrastructure: Regular maintenance of drainage systems ensures that water can flow freely, reducing the risk of damage to roads, buildings, and other infrastructure. Minimizing Risks: By clearing debris and obstructions, we can mitigate the risk of localized flooding in streets and basements, safeguarding homes and businesses. Enhancing Resilience: Investing in drainage maintenance enhances our resilience to extreme weather events and climate change impacts, helping us adapt to future challenges. Preserving Public Safety: Proactive management of drainage systems minimizes hazards, protects lives, and ensures the well-being of residents, particularly in flood-prone areas. Let's prioritize drainage maintenance as a proactive strategy for flood risk management and disaster preparedness. Together, we can build more resilient communities and mitigate the impacts of flooding. #FloodPrevention #InfrastructureResilience #CommunitySafety 🛠️🏡💧 #cctvinspectionssewerage #majujohor

Storm Bert has recently caused severe flooding across the UK, leading to at least five fatalities and leaving 350,000 homes without power. Over 500 homes and businesses have been inundated, with approximately 100 flood warnings still active. This series of extreme weather events has intensified scrutiny of the UK's preparedness for climate-related incidents, highlighting concerns over the maintenance and effectiveness of flood defences. A report by the Public Accounts Committee earlier this year criticised the current approach to flood defence, describing it as "contradictory and self-defeating." Climate scientists have found that the record-breaking wet weather over the past 18 months, leading to significant flooding, was made ten times more likely and 20% wetter due to human-caused global heating. https://lnkd.in/exuGAUQ8 #climatechange

Recent reports have highlighted a staggering fact: flood damage in the United States now amounts to billions of dollars annually. As climate change intensifies weather patterns, communities across the nation are facing increasingly severe flooding events, challenging both their resilience and resources. In these critical times, ATLAS-SSI is at the forefront of protecting communities and infrastructure from the devastating impacts of floods. Our robust screening and water management solutions play a pivotal role in safeguarding water intake systems and other critical infrastructure during such events. By ensuring that debris and excess water are efficiently managed, we help maintain the integrity and functionality of essential services. Our products, like the Gator Rake, provide reliable protection for water treatment plants and other facilities by preventing debris buildup, which is crucial during unexpected and extreme weather conditions. This not only helps in minimizing the immediate effects of flooding but also contributes to quicker recovery and less economic fallout. As we continue to witness the financial and environmental impacts of flooding, ATLAS-SSI remains committed to delivering solutions that not only protect but also enhance community resilience. Together, we can tackle these challenges and reduce the economic burden of flood damages. “The developed world has inherited an attitude to flooding that suggests we can just keep building walls higher and higher to defend ourselves. Structural flood protection is not a zero-sum game; the water must go somewhere. And, more often than not, it can end up making matters worse for the places not defended, which usually means it ends up with only the more affluent being afforded the structural measures of protection.” Dr. Oliver Wing (Chief Research Officer, Fathom) offers striking insights in this article by Hiscox and Tom King on why cities and urban areas must deliver innovation in response to the flood risk challenge. https://lnkd.in/d43tFEfX #climatechange #floodrisk #hiscoxglobalinsight

Despite the increasing frequency and intensity of floods across the UK, current government policies and campaigns fall short in providing the necessary support and protection for those affected. The National Flood Forum is calling on all political parties to make a bigger, bolder and sustainable approach to the flood risk management part of their manifesto. This includes a concrete commitment to -Overhaul current Flood Defence Grant in Aid funding criteria. -Tackle the root causes of flooding & give flood risk communities lasting protection. -Expand focus from bias towards PFR to all interventions. -Better funding for Local Authorities. -Stop building on flood plains, allowing space for water. -Improved collaboration between responsible agencies and communities. Your support is crucial in amplifying this message and driving change. To find out more about our proposals for better, more sustainable approach to flood risk management, head to https://lnkd.in/egjvYP2c #FloodAwareness #Supporting #Flooding #NationalFloodForum
