While preparing a section of a report for a client on the future of disaster philanthropy, and it's growing importance for small to medium sized coastal metro areas, I came across an article in Bloomberg discussing the increasing strain on FEMA due to the rise in climate-related disasters. The insights shared in the article are particularly timely as we navigate the challenges of climate resilience and disaster mitigation. A highlight for me was seeing my own cousin, Sarah Sullivant, quoted in the piece. As a Managing Director at S&P Global Ratings, she succinctly captures the core issue at the federal level: “If FEMA funding doesn’t grow at the same rate of disasters, something is going to give. These disasters are getting more costly. It will require more funding for FEMA. If that funding is not forthcoming, we are talking about long-term state and local governments being on the hook for more.” This statement underscores the urgent need for increased investment in disaster preparedness and resilience. At Shield and Castle Consulting, we specialize in helping public and private sector clients insulate their infrastructures from climate-related disasters and embed sustainability at scale. Our work aims to support businesses and communities in building robust, resilient systems that can withstand the growing threats posed by our changing climate. FEMA is not a 911 resource. This shouldn’t occur. More municipalities, counties, and states, should invest in ACTUAL emergency/disaster/crisis management programs and resources, and STOP relying on FEMA
As extreme heat and wildfire smoke continue to impact many parts of the country, a multistate coalition of environmental, labor, and health groups has called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to release vital disaster relief funding. Why isn’t extreme heat considered a disaster in the U.S.? https://flip.it/YImoAJ food for discussion: What is the role of FEMA when the emergency is chronic or cumulative? The issue can be recast as: Whats the role of FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund (DRF), vis the agency's preparedness and mitigation funding streams?

Flood-prone Far North NSW Coast community Mullumbimby will be more resilient to natural disasters when major work is completed to the main evacuation route for the town. A total of $4.76 million from the Australian Government and NSW Government will be spent on Mullumbimby Road, to ensure it is rebuilt stronger and better able to withstand future weather events. During the 2022 major flood event in the Northern Rivers, Mullumbimby was cut off by flood waters while much of the town was devastated. When work is completed on the road, the project will reduce the impacts of future flooding while improving access for emergency services, council and utility services during and after flood events. Work will start in December 2024. A grant of $2.77 million from the jointly funded Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) will allow Byron Shire Council to improve drainage and reconstruct a section of the road, near Gulgan Road, with an additional $1.99 million through the jointly funded DRFA for heavy patching on the road. In May 2006, New England experienced severe flooding, particularly impacting Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The record flooding led to a presidential disaster declaration. At least 600 roads had to be closed for a time, and 60 were completely washed away in the raging floodwaters. Many businesses suffered from water damage and operational interruptions. The widespread impact emphasizes the importance of comprehensive backup and disaster recovery solutions to safeguard critical data and ensure that businesses can continue to operate despite severe disruptions.
