While preparing a section of a report for a client on the future of disaster philanthropy, and it's growing importance for small to medium sized coastal metro areas, I came across an article in Bloomberg discussing the increasing strain on FEMA due to the rise in climate-related disasters. The insights shared in the article are particularly timely as we navigate the challenges of climate resilience and disaster mitigation. A highlight for me was seeing my own cousin, Sarah Sullivant, quoted in the piece. As a Managing Director at S&P Global Ratings, she succinctly captures the core issue at the federal level: “If FEMA funding doesn’t grow at the same rate of disasters, something is going to give. These disasters are getting more costly. It will require more funding for FEMA. If that funding is not forthcoming, we are talking about long-term state and local governments being on the hook for more.” This statement underscores the urgent need for increased investment in disaster preparedness and resilience. At Shield and Castle Consulting, we specialize in helping public and private sector clients insulate their infrastructures from climate-related disasters and embed sustainability at scale. Our work aims to support businesses and communities in building robust, resilient systems that can withstand the growing threats posed by our changing climate.
