New Energy Risk has been supporting first-of-a-kind projects with technology performance insurance for over a decade and has enabled over $4B of capital investment. How can we bridge institutional and capital gaps for first-of-a-kind (FOAK) project development in order to accelerate climate solutions in time and at scale? 💡 Throughout the development and launch of Trellis Climate (including when we were still known as the Early Climate Infrastructure (ECI) program!), we have relied on the 2022 Barriers to the Timely Deployment of Climate Infrastructure report by Prime Coalition to guide our work. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the project development capital gap, which was identified as one of the four gaps in the report, we conducted extensive field research and spoke with many different individuals and organizations, including FOAK climate companies, climate investors, and ecosystem partners. As part of our efforts to promote knowledge sharing, we are excited to announce the publication of our findings 🔍 "Catalyzing Development of First-of-a-Kind Climate Projects” sheds light on the major challenges faced by FOAK projects in the field of climate infrastructure development and proposes viable solutions to overcome them. ICYMI - last week the Venture Climate Alliance published the Portfolio Alignment Framework, the first of three net zero frameworks created specifically for the venture capital community. The Driftwood Climate team was honored to have developed this over the past year in partnership with the VCA leadership and member firms. Now is THE pivotal moment for the VC industry to tackle climate change: 🔌 the growth in data center compute for AI applications is causing electric load growth in the US for the first time in 30 years. Every dollar of burn from a VC-backed AI startup has a meaningful carbon footprint, whether or not that company ends up succeeding. 🌎 the climate-mitigating technologies we will need from 2030-2050 are currently being incubated in VC portfolios. The next five years will be critical for scaling, stability and channeling capital to those companies with the clearest route to positive impact. 🏦 the momentum behind net zero alliances has....stalled from the initial wave of optimism after COP26. The VCA has the opportunity (and mandate) to prove that a net zero goal can be practical and value creating. If you find this first framework exciting, just wait for what comes next!
