It was great to see how many people joined South Pole’s Europe Live Q&A on the Science Based Targets initiative's Scope 3 Update last week! A key question asked by many participants was, what these discussion papers actually mean in terms of #scope3 target setting. And while it could well be that the suggestions may translate into more work on the target-setting side of the process, because companies should: > consider several additional factors when selecting target boundaries, > prioritize climate-relevant emission sources in the near-term, and > develop a robust framework of targets and policies to address value chain emissions; We also expect that the actual target implementation process will be more streamlined, concrete and credible. The proposed changes and framework will hopefully help in reconciling the realities of value chains today, including real and perceived barriers that hinder value chain decarbonization and allow companies to deliver on their climate goals. 🌐 Watch our recording of the session or reach out directly if you have any questions. https://lnkd.in/d8BNRM3g 🙏🏼 Big thank you to Clara von der Ropp, Abigail Smart, Nadia K. for making this Q&A happen so swiftly, and to Alice Rimpot, Roby Crean, Bettina Wisthaler, Himani Gupta and Sonya Samson for the competent and valuable insights!

This week Emilie Mazzacurati and I had the opportunity to attend Battelle's #ICR24 event alongside some amazing and visionary ecosystem and company builders in the climate resilience and adaptation space. Key take aways from this conference: 🔬 Research and innovation is happening across various fields that we can leverage to address adaptation and resilience challenges but we need company builders to realize these opportunities! 🏛 With massive government funding for infrastructure, energy systems, national security, and science comes huge opportunity to fund the next generation of adaptation and resilience founders BUT we need clear demand signals from government and better procurement programs at early stages 🌳 We need to find agile ways to test solutions alongside communities so that we can refine them with impact in mind and solicit feedback from those who stand to gain and lose the most as solutions are commercialized 🏗 Creative and catalytic capital sources are needed to fund new innovations in this space. We urgently need philanthropy, government, and the private sector working TOGETHER to build a capital stack purpose built for resiliency impact! As we learned on climate tech mitigation, it takes a village to build an ecosystem. I'm thankful that our team at Tailwind has the opportunity to work with so many visionary leaders as we create the enabling conditions for scale in the climate adaptation and resilience space. Jaron Lotan, Executive Director of the BIRD Foundation, recognizes unprecedented opportunities in the challenges presented by climate change. In his recent Op-Ed featured in The Times of Israel, Lotan discusses the crucial role of climate tech innovation and cross-border collaboration in addressing the escalating climate crisis. The BIRD Foundation, through its longstanding BIRD Energy program and its recently launched U.S.-Israel Energy Center, serves as a pivotal platform for developing the transformative technologies needed to tackle and adapt to climate challenges. A greener future hinges on the collaboration of ingenious minds working together to create novel and scalable climate tech solutions. This embodies BIRD's mission, and Lotan is optimistic about its potential to drive innovation, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient world. 🔗Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ewusqgRR #climatetech #climatechange #sustainability #BIRDgrants #US #Israel #collaboration #greenfuture #RandD #technology #innovation

Another milestone in the ULTIMO project is imminent: the next General Meeting will take place in Oslo from 23 to 25 April. We are looking forward to visiting the demo site in Groruddalen. And there are many important points on the programme we're going to work on: For example, Ruter As will present innovation projects and we will discuss how we can utilise synergies with ULTIMO. We will also develop webinars to share our knowledge and learn what others have achieved already. A very important topic we will also discuss is the impacts of EU Data Act and Data Sharing / Sovereignty. Well worth watching this episode of Nate Hagens podcast series, where he speaks with Johan Rockström, head of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, renowned Earth systems scientist (and friend since 20 years). Here are some themes covered: 🌡️ State of Planetary Health Six of the nine planetary boundaries have already been transgressed. This alarming situation highlights the critical state of our planet's health. Climate change remains a significant threat, but it is not the only one. Biodiversity loss and disrupted biogeochemical cycles, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus flows, are equally critical. So climate action needs to be integrated within the broader context of all planetary boundaries. ⚠️ Risks of Tipping Points Tipping points refer to critical thresholds where small changes can lead to drastic and potentially irreversible shifts in the Earth system: Arctic ice melt, Amazon rainforest dieback, and the slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Crossing these tipping points can trigger cascading effects, exacerbating global climate and ecosystem crises, altering global weather patterns, impacting agriculture and water availability worldwide. 🧪 Scientific Advancements & Actions For every year that passes, scientists have both more empirical data, better models and thereby greater understanding of planetary processes. Recent advancements in scientific models have shown the interconnectedness of the nine planetary boundaries. Integrating them into global policy frameworks is crucial. 🌟 Coping mechanisms Johan highlighted the challenges of balancing scientific rigor with effective communication to the public and policymakers. And despite the daunting challenges, he remains hopeful about the future. Johan's insights remind us of the critical role we all play in safeguarding our planet's future, not least by talking about the problems and sharing information. The sense of urgency he conveys is a stark reminder that the magnitude of the task ahead is enormous. 🌍💚 #Sustainability #PlanetaryBoundaries #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalScience #SustainabilityLeadership https://lnkd.in/dMnX2gC4

At the start of last weeks Baltic Stakeholder Conference PROTECT BALTIC took a chance and asked participants what an ideal Baltic Sea would be for them, and the role protection plays in it. During the event AI then used the direct stakeholder input and put together a video, which we shared at the closing of the conference. May I present: the stakeholders vision of the ideal Baltic Sea. 🌊 At the Baltic Stakeholder Conference 2024 – hosted by PROTECT BALTIC and HELCOM - Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission, we embarked on a transformative journey towards envisioning the future of the Baltic Sea. We asked our audience two simple yet profound questions: What is your ideal future for the Baltic Sea? What role do protected areas play in achieving this vision? The responses were inspiring, diverse, and filled with hope for a sustainable and resilient Baltic Sea ecosystem. With the help of Unie and their AI Evie 🤖, we created a visually captivating video shaped by the voices of our audience. #BSC2024 #marineprotection #missionocean

By living over 10 years in cities severely impacted by floods, hurricanes and sea level rises like Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong, I witnessed firsthand the impacts of climate change. I knew that capital had to be mobilized toward solutions that help society not only survive but thrive in the face of environmental challenges. Since 2022, we built a coalition of investors now influencing over $22 billion to climate solutions, they understand the immense economic and social value in funding climate mitigation & adaptation technologies. In 10 years, I see the Climate Tech Coalition as a global renowned leader in climate adaptation finance, having backed at least 500 transformative companies and delivering serious return for its investors. More importantly, we’ll have contributed to reducing the potential $36-60 trillion in global GDP losses worldwide, playing a key role in helping societies prepare for and mitigate climate risks.
