Just like how Gen-Z/Millenials hated when the Gen Z /Boomers didn’t give them chances, why are we still playing the same games against them. Social media is a space that regardless of how you define yourself you can find community, voice your opinion, and find new means of expression. Social media is for everyone! As social media professionals we need to make sure the future of social always remains an inclusive space. Remember Gen Z isn’t always going to be your target audience, and just because you are Gen Z doesn’t mean you know how to market to them 💡

New "Technology" post from THE HILL: Parents' rights group to launch anti-TikTok ad ahead of House vote A parents' rights group led by a former Trump administration official is launching a new ad on Friday warning of the dangers of TikTok ahead of a potential House vote on the app. The American Parents Coalition is spending $500,000 on a mix of television and digital ads in Washington, D.C., as well as in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Montana, all states where an incumbent Democratic senator is up for reelection. The details of the ad buy were shared first with The Hill. The 30-second ad, titled "TikTok Nightmare," described the app's algorithm as "every parent's nightmare," citing a study that showed eating disorder content and self-harm content has billions of views. “TikTok’s algorithm is every parent’s worst nightmare. The Chinese-owned app pushes content promoting suicide, eating disorders, and other harmful trends," Alleigh Marré, executive director of the American Parents Coalition, said in a statement. "A platform that is controlled by a foreign adversary and targets our kids is not just a threat to the safety of our children, but our nation as a whole," added Marré, who served as a national spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services during the Trump administration. The ad launch comes as House Republican leaders included legislation that could ban TikTok in the U.S. if its China-based owner ByteDance doesn't divest in a series of bills that would fund Ukraine, Israel and allies in the Indo-Pacific. The House in March passed a standalone bill that could ban TikTok in a 352-65 vote. President Biden has said he would sign the TikTok legislation if it reaches his desk. Social media is important for Latinos. They use it more and engage with advertisements more than the general population. A recent research by Nielsen shows that 70% of Latinos in the U.S. use social media constantly. Should creators be working with political advertisers? According to Censuswide, most have not even been approached by those advertisers. In fact, only 39% of US creators have been asked to work on paid political content for either this election year, past election years, or both But should those 39% do it? It's hard to decline a paycheck when you are a creator, especially if they don't come all that often. And politics is big money. Social network political ad spending will reach a whopping $610 million this year 🤯 , nearly double what it was in 2020. But only 22% of US consumers welcome creators posting paid and nonpaid political content. And many brands wont work with a creator at all if they have expressed political views in the past (and they will search back far). My personal opinion is that you better have very good reason to post political content because it will absolutely have an impact on your future partnerships. And oftentimes there are ways to support causes or efforts without outwardly supporting parties or candidates. For some creators (like Nadya Okamoto who we spoke about this topic on the Creator Economy Live podcast), specific topics like women's reproductive rights will align very closely with the brands DNA. So it may make sense to participate in that dialogue and have an opinion. It's not a small decision for creators or brands, so one they shouldn't take lightly. I'm curious to see what kind of political content we are going to see from both in the next 60 days. On balance, we'd suggest that banning social media for under-16s is the right thing to do. But, as this BBC story shows, there's a considerable number of factors to be taken into consideration - not least of which is how do you make it happen, how do you oversee it and the question of whether 16 is a bit arbitrary. Clearly had social media been regulated from the very start, we wouldn't have to be thinking about how we're going to impose regulation on young people today. (The same - broadly speaking - goes for AI.) Reducing usage of social media/influencers as marketing tools to reach the youth demographic (as a whole) isn't going to solve the wider problem, but if it makes social media less compelling for younger users, that's got to be a good thing.
