It’s giving age discrimination ☕️ Some of my fave creators and co workers are over 30. Just like how Gen-Z/Millenials hated when the Gen Z /Boomers didn’t give them chances, why are we still playing the same games against them. Social media is a space that regardless of how you define yourself you can find community, voice your opinion, and find new means of expression. Social media is for everyone! As social media professionals we need to make sure the future of social always remains an inclusive space. Remember Gen Z isn’t always going to be your target audience, and just because you are Gen Z doesn’t mean you know how to market to them 💡

My Grumble with Bumble 🐝 Everyone saw the ad right? Everyone probably sighed because it missed the mark so seismically. This a lesson to all brands to really pay attention to what people are wanting and to lean into their communities to hear pain points directly from them. Why was this icky? ❌ Showed that there wasn't an authentic understanding on the WHY of why people are frustrated with modern day dating apps. ❌ Harmful generalisations around topics like celibacy which whilst attempting to be 'lighthearted' actually did the opposite in alienating individuals and stigmatising this sort of lifestyle choice. The lesson? 👂 Listen to the communities that are using your product or service - understand the pain points from a place of empathy. 📖 Know who your audience are as we know Gen Z are the generation that place the MOST emphasis on diversity, equality and inclusion. We are the generation that will bring brands up but equally bring them right back down and call out anything problematic. My hope is that future ads will do better and that other brands seeing the way it has been received will put more effort into trouble shooting their ads. #marketing #socialmediamarketing #ads #genzmarketing

What's the one subreddit or TikTok trend you just *can’t* stop scrolling? 👀 I have to admit, writing this for The Straits Times made me feel like I’m in a strange in-between, too millennial for Gen Z; and too Gen Z for millennials. But trends today are no joke—they’re creating real-world impact and civic engagement. Think: Taylor Swift's endorsement of VP Kamala Harris, or how movements for climate justice and inclusion are thriving, especially with #EcoTok and #AbilityHeroes on TikTok, where creators share actionable steps for a greener lifestyle and amplify the voices of people with disabilities. These spaces let us explore quirky passions and dive into raw conversations, just like the early days of Myspace and Reddit, Inc. where you’d stumble upon anything from skincare tips to bees in top hats. After all, what makes these communities so appealing is the mix of anonymity, shared experiences, and a genuine sense of unfiltered belonging, whether you're 16 or 60. So, before you dismiss the next #skibidi, why not consider that it could be a home for people making real impact? 🫱🏻🫲🏼

An interesting article by Mike Males that highlights the remarkable progress among women and girls in recent decades. It's clear how the internet, by making knowledge more accessible, and social media, where women are thriving, earning more than men, and even creating new careers as influencers, play a significant role in this positive trend. It paints a very encouraging picture! https://lnkd.in/eiPY7GGJ

This TikTok reached +600,000 likes. Breakdown of the latest (weird) trend: Everyone loves a dramatic moment—especially when it’s funny. That’s why this “Defying Gravity” trend is going viral. What is it about: Creators sit still, dramatically “holding space” for the iconic song from Wicked. The twist? They add a funny or relatable text overlay: - Me holding space for the avocado I finally ripened. - When I delete 3,000 blurry photos from my phone. Why does it work? Emotion: The song’s themes of breaking free and self-expression resonate deeply, especially with the LGBTQ+ community. Humor: The contrast between big emotions and everyday moments makes it relatable and shareable. Simplicity: It’s easy to join in—all you need is the sound and a creative idea. How you can use it? This could be a great fit for a fitness app! Imagine using this trend to create hilarious, relatable content about everyday wins. On Ramdam, your brief could be ready in minutes, with creators lined up to work within hours. I’m Xavier, Co-founder & CEO at Ramdam. I post daily about trending creator ads.

Critical Thinking #9 “Would you rather be stuck in the woods with a man or a bear?” You might recognize this hypothetical from TikTok – specifically, a street interview by media company SCREENSHOT. Most of the interviewees, all women, chose “the bear.” Naturally, this led to a series of calm and measured discussions about feminism and gender equality in modern society. In actuality, hordes of adult males aired their displeasure with the results – many made anime memes, TikTok essays about why chads like themselves would be far better than a bloodthirsty bear, and even generated A.I. videos of a horrifying melting bear called “Slippery Skin” that preys on women who choose the bear. Perhaps such behaviour is why some women would rather deal with 200 kilos of furry muscle (an animal that they could avoid antagonising entirely). It didn’t matter that this simple scenario gave no additional choices – the interviewees are given no info about the kind of man they'd face, no details about the forest they’re stuck in or whether there might be a chance of encountering other human passerbys. Neither did it matter that some women have legitimate reasons for their choice – the World Health Organization found that 1 in 3 women worldwide have been “subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.” Or, put it more bluntly, as some female TikTok commenters wrote: “worst case scenario, a bear would just kill me.” The implication being that when faced with an unknown person, who has sentience unlike the bear, there may be fates worse than death. The angry men were also quick to weaponize the negative experiences that men have faced from women, quickly presenting the question “would you rather share your feelings with a woman or a tree”. Yet, in other scenarios, some of these same men mock other males as ‘betas’ or ‘simps’ for being emotionally open and/or not following the conventional definition of masculinity. So, where is the critical thinking here? Why is this rapidly growing number of men, young and old, so quick to anger and gleefully tear down others unlike them? How can they fantasize about hanging men who assaulted their own daughters or wives, yet balk at the responses to this hypothetical? Where is the empathy? Every man has a mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, wife, daughter, and/or female friend. As per the WHO’s findings, some of them will likely face that terrible reality. But remember – just because those women chose the bear over a random man because of traumatising experiences, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have men that they love and trust. Perhaps, you could be the man that women in your life would choose over a bear. Thus, if you’re having conflicted feelings over this viral question, there is only one question, rooted in #CriticalThinking, that you should ask: "What kind of man do I want to be?" #criticalthinkingacademy https://lnkd.in/giftHrEX

This year marks the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark legislation that has transformed the lives of millions of Americans by ensuring equal opportunities and accessibility for all. Signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush, the ADA has been a cornerstone in the fight against discrimination based on disability. The Impact of the ADA 🔹 Equal Opportunities: The ADA prohibits discrimination in various areas such as employment, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications. This has opened up countless opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate fully in society. 🔹 Accessibility Improvements: From ramps and accessible restrooms to captioning and sign language interpreters, the ADA has mandated numerous changes that make public spaces and services more accessible. 🔹 Technological Advancements: The rise of digital accessibility, including screen readers, closed captioning for videos, and website accessibility standards, can be attributed to the ADA’s influence. Key Achievements Over the Years • Employment Rights: The ADA has empowered individuals with disabilities to seek employment without fear of discrimination, promoting diverse and inclusive workplaces. • Public Accommodations: Businesses and public facilities are now required to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities, ensuring equal access and opportunity. • Education: Educational institutions have adapted to meet the needs of students with disabilities, providing necessary support and accommodations to ensure a fair learning environment. Looking Ahead As we celebrate this milestone, it’s essential to recognize that the journey towards full inclusion is ongoing. Continued advocacy and adaptation are necessary to meet the evolving needs of people with disabilities, especially in the rapidly changing landscape of technology and communication. Let’s honor the legacy of the ADA by committing to a future where accessibility and equality are universally upheld. https://adata.org/ #ADA34 #AccessibilityForAll #EqualRights

"Reinventing the first move: Bumble’s journey from niche dating app to a platform for social connection." Gone are the days when initiating contact in a dating scenario was strictly seen as a man’s role. Bumble has not only disrupted traditional dating norms but has also evolved into a robust platform fostering not just romantic connections but also friendships and professional networks. Bumble began with the unique proposition of women making the first move, challenging entrenched social norms. It has since expanded its services to include Bumble BFF and Bumble Bizz, leveraging cutting-edge technology to create meaningful interactions online. Now operating globally, Bumble has transformed the act of swiping into a more respectful and meaningful engagement. This is my first Product Teardown for NextLeap's learn-in-public challenge, where I explore Bumble's Notification feature.
