There are two things I love about attending tech events: the energy and the networking opportunities. But my journey to London Tech Week and the Scotch & Pitches event organised by Foras was anything but smooth. I was super excited to attend, but I almost got lost on my way to the venue. Therefore, I had to rely on my phone's Google Maps, which decided to act up at the worst possible time. When I finally arrived, I couldn't find my name on the registration list. But after a few tense moments, I realised I had registered under a different email. Therefore, I got in just in time for the pitches. The event was buzzing with energy and excitement, but what really stood out were the different pitching styles. Some startups were very technical, therefore focusing on data and metrics. But then, the founder of Generalist World, Milly Tamati took the stage and told an incredible story about her childhood. She shared how people always told her she couldn't be a generalist and be knowledgeable in different areas, therefore inspiring her to start her business. Her story resonated with me because I consider myself a generalist too. But it wasn't just her; many other founders like Janani Prabhakaran, Angela Prentner-Smith (FRSA), Eilidh Mutch used storytelling to connect with the investors, therefore making their pitches memorable. The Foras team Dec McLaughlin, Caro Melendez 🔜 Turing Fest / Slush, known for their work in supporting Scottish startups, outdid themselves with this event. But their dedication to fostering innovation was clear throughout. Therefore, it's no wonder they attracted such a diverse and talented group of founders and investors. Despite the initial hiccups, attending Scotch & Pitches was an inspiring experience. The energy, the innovative ideas, and the powerful stories made it all worthwhile. But wait a minute, I didn’t see Lawal O. and the Econome team at the event. I wonder why? It was great catching up with Calum Purdie and Beena Sharma at the event. Tag someone who was at the event. Last month, we were delighted to share our quarterly progress reports with our partners and brands for The Modernists. In Summary: 1.      Membership increased by 30%, reaching 565 active members. 2.      We hosted 14 events and partnerships, all of which sold out. 3.      Notable events included the Austrian Embassy Ball, AI and Politics event at The Conduit, and a charity dinner with AllBright. 4.      Sustained growth of our social media presence. 5.      New brand partnerships were established with Maclynn - (formerly The Vida Consultancy) and BlckBx (personal assistance service). 6.      We surpassed our yearly target of 500 members. Looking ahead to Q3, The Modernists plan to: 1.      Introduce new partnerships with venues like Nikita, The Hearth, and Upstairs at Langan's. 2.      Continue to develop a varied events calendar, including our one-year anniversary celebration! 3.      Develop a new subscription tier and mobile website MVP. The way Innovate Lancashire goes about it is by using connectors to make warm intros into the people that can best further your growth, whether that be funds, primes, other founders or that business that can provide the service or product you need. I'm not a Startup business, but if I was, this is what I'd be doing right now for getting support.* *If I was also based in Lancashire. I'd get involved with Lancashire Digital Hub: Powered by Innovate Lancashire and Barclays Eagle Labs events to meet like minded founders and grow my peer network. Dan Knowles, Lekhana Manjunatha and 🏵️ Cat Mawdsley are putting on some excellent events on all around Lancashire through Northern Reach) I'd be on the look out for North West based Accelerators (that have a good reputation) so that I can get growth/scaling support and widen my peer network. (Baltic Ventures for example, drop Mo Aldalou a DM for more in that). I'd engage with fhunded - if my journey looks like I need investment at some point, then understanding the funding scene in the North will be needed, plus I'd get access to other people on a similar route to talk to and sound board off. I'd look out for and attend events in Manchester, it's close enough that from most places in Lancashire it's less than an hour away. It has a lot going on, and I'd be building my network there too. I'd want to be based out of either Fraser House Hub, to surround myself with other like minded businesses and the opportunities that come from there, or a similar hub. But I'd also consider working from a Manchester co-working space once a week that has a sector focus if relevant (for the people and opportunities) - like DiSH. I'd position myself as the face of the brand and post regularly on LinkedIn (Patrick Smith is a great example of this). Opportunities will come my way from this effort. I'd look to back this up with getting involved in relevant events as a panelist. And finally, but hopefully I'd have done this already, but I'd drop me a DM and see if there's anything relevant I can link you into (like Innovate Lancashire , British Business Bank or anything at the Uni's) #funding #equityinvestment
