Loving Jamie's article on the North East being a great place for business. Then, I would.... I travelled 325 miles to base Myfolks there. Of course, I wanted to help create wealth in and for the north east (as many know, our great Tyne Bridge is represented in the Myfolks' logo). But, I've been building commercial wraps around tech products for 25 years before I founded Myfolks and I wouldn't have made that emotional choice if it didn't make sound economic and commercial sense. The North East tech scene is navigatable - one of the first places I was pointed to is Sunderland Software City, from there to Paul Lancaster's events (check put Pl_tform) and on to the Innovation Supernetwork and onwards. The Universities, including my beloved Northumbria, Newcastle, Sunderland and Teeside are doing great work in the tech space, both in the north east and beyond and they work together - with industry, with founders and, crucially, with each other. Why wouldn't you want to benefit from the National Innovation Centre for Data in today's data driven world? Where would Myfolks be without the support of the National Innovation Centre for Ageing, their neighbours, located on the Helix in Newcastle and Health Innovation (North east and north Cumbria)? I hurtle about cramming in meetings in a way I couldn't in the south, often on foot, or the metro. You can do more in a day. The business community and the founders' community are so strong, helpful and collaborative. Plus, there's at least 7 Greggs in Newcastle and, did you note the tech Sela introduced recently to enable deaf kids to experience the noise and passion of the match? Makes you proud... HMRC: Hyperscale PaaS for Hyperscale Performance. HMRC offers an exemplar blueprint for a Platform Architecture, and how it can enable rapid digital service innovation at hyperscale levels. HMRC's Multi-channel Digital Tax Platform (MDTP) employs Continuous Delivery at scale, operating a cloud platform for over 130 user-facing applications powered by over 1000 microservices. The platform delivered financial support to more than 12 million employed and self-employed workers during the pandemic, processing 67,000 job claims within half an hour and handling 440,000 applications for government grants on the first day of its operation. On the 30th of October GPlates Software Development had its 21st birthday. The first public version of GPlates was released exactly 21 years ago, with development led by the legendary James Boyden, who had teamed up with the no less legendary Hamish Ivey-Law who unfortunately could not join us at the Opera Bar for the birthday celebration. Hamish, we missed you, but we enjoyed the story recounted by James on your cunning and successful plan to both get hired as a team at the time! Enoch Lau also joined the early GPlates team and is credited with developing the initial GPlates python extension. Many years later we were fortunate for GPlates to be picked up for support by AuScope, which allowed us to develop GPlates and its sister python libraries pyGPlates and GPlately into mature and stable software, led by John Cannon and Michael Chin, not to mention the GPlates Portal, GPlates web services and the GPlates App. Many others made contributions along the way, especially Mike Gurnis and Mark Turner at Caltech, Trond Torsvik, Robin Watson and Carmen Gaina at NGU and the Univ Oslo, Ben Mather who initiated the development of GPlately, Mike Tetley who took the lead in developing Plate Tectonic Tools (now part of GPlately) and Adam Kocsis who led the development of rgplates. In addition there are numerous contributors to GPlates plate model development, particularly Maria Seton, Sabin Zahirovic, Simon Williams, Joanne Whittaker, Nicky Wright, Andrew Merdith, Xianzhi Cao, Edward Clennett, Alan Collins, Sergei Pisarevskiy , Nicolas Flament, Grace Shephard Derrick Hasterok, Sanzhong Li, Sheree Armistead, Morgan Blades, Jacob Mulder, Dan Bower, Christian Heine, Eline Le Breton, Shaofeng Liu, Samuel Russell, Ting Yang, Alex Young, Stuart Clark, Yatheesh Vadakkeyakath and Jonathon Leonard. Earlier this week, I had the joy of launching the Scaleup Institute’s 2024 annual review, 10 years after the report I was commissioned to write on how to stimulate UK economic growth. Amongst other things, we were convened to celebrate the UK's move from 13th in the global scaleup league table to 3rd. Thank you to ScaleUp Institute and Irene Graham OBE for your incredible work in this area. Since then, I've had several occasions to reflect on the fact that scaleup progress is in no small part due to the university sector encouraging students to work for scaleup companies alongside their academic studies. Amongst other reflections, I am drawn to celebrate the extraordinary Goldsmith's University Alum, Noshin Begum, whom F4S wrote about in their annual report—just a few of the 2 million career encounters brokered between students and scaleups. Noshin had no less than 8 internships with scaleup companies during her studies - how cool is that? From her first internship in August 2020 at The Barber Shop to PoC developer at Octopus Energy a few months later, to software engineer at Alpidata, Ux at Sticks Research Agency, UX designer at R3 to ...
