Here’s a pro tip for anyone adding a Stripe DNS code string to their website 👀 Double-check for extra characters at the end of the string! Sometimes hidden characters like spaces or full-stops get added. To the naked eye, you’d never know something was off, but it can throw off the ENTIRE integration, causing errors and headaches for everyone. A quick once-over can save you HOURS of troubleshooting. I've made this point before but it's becoming more and more stark. The people that should be dominating platforms like this are the people with the real hard skills to code, develop and implement solutions. Instead it's dominated by relentless strategy and sales conferences, posts , talks and forums. Never has the true tech engineer role been more diminished at a time when they are truly the only ones that can make the change happen. it's oddly unique to tech roles as well. It's like having a team of trained qualified architects and engineers but instead of them discussing their problems they send the marketing team out to find out what everyone else is doing. If I'm down for heart surgery I want to talk to the surgeon , the anesthetist , the senior nurse. Not the finance team. I'm not dismissing the finance team but the ones I want best informed and strategizing are the product owners and engineers. Firms with a defined tech product at their core need to be driven by the software engineers with finance , marketing , HR reporting into them. Then you become truly tech and innovation led.

50+ Passwords? Are you insane? Who's got time for that... How many different passwords do you use? Why should you bother? If you are using one password for everything, then you need your head examined. Because, if one account gets hacked, all others are compromised too. But, how the heck do you remember all your passwords? You need 50 or more, and they all have to be different! Right? Don't be ridiculous; most of us just don’t have that brain capacity, and we all have more important things to store in our brains! Instead, use a password manager, that way, you just need to remember ONE password, and the rest is easy. There are loads out there, and they're relatively straightforward to set up. Local competition? When asked about local competition for Black Nova, I often respond that there technically isn’t any! There are quite a few website companies in our area but none of them specialise in building WordPress websites like we do. To my knowledge, no other company locally uses only bespoke WordPress designs and never uses templates. Although there's room for everyone in the market, I've never viewed others as competitors. Perhaps I should conduct more research on competitor analysis, as it's a topic that's frequently discussed. On this Earth Day lets bring your attention to the increasing demand of data storage facilities which requires Google's sites alone each day consumes 1703435.3 litres of water to keep the systems cool to avoid over heating. If you have any old pictures or documents which you don't need delete them to make a difference, this is all costing resources to store your data within the cloud creating the demand for more water to be used for cooling.

Earlier this week over on our iAM Compliant page, we posted a clip from a really useful fireside chat I managed to grab with the amazing and knowledgable Rebecca Coates late last year. Did you catch it? 🎬 Don't worry if not, it's still there for you to take a look at your leisure. And I recommend you do if you want some great insight into radon in your school. I'm kind of surprised that this risk isn't as well known as say, asbestos, or carbon monoxide, other 'invisible' dangers. Radon can be really dangerous - and it's sadly all too common here in the UK. While I'm surprised, I do understand that there can be anxiety around radon. Maybe you view it as 'just another thing to worry about'. There's always an element of turning a blind eye to things that we don't want to deal with. Thing is, it doesn't make the situation better, it just puts people at risk. ⛔️ As Rebecca says in the chat, there are health risks if radon is present, and as a leader, you'll have to manage the stress and concern around testing, and even more so if there's a positive reading. But, even if it is found, there are actions that can be taken to minimise the risk. Higher risks obviously come from years of exposure to radon. If you're only exposed to it for a short time, then there's a lower risk, but it's there nonetheless. It can cause things like lung cancer, which is clearly very concerning. But, as I said, there are things you can do if it's found - if you bother to look for it. You can't really avoid looking for it either - there's legislation in place that you'll need to comply with just like for other hazards. Your main concern (and your staff's) is the lack of information about it, so why not round off this #RadonAwarenessWeek by learning more about it? Start with that 5-minute interview with Rebecca. If you want further information, the team has been working on a brand new eLearning course which will be added to the LMS, and that'll be linked on our page too. Don't be afraid of tackling radon. **Website project case study** Boosting the online visibility for Settlement Agreement Solicitor website ... This includes identifying relavent keywords and optimising the pages, as well as checking the site is spot on in terms of technical set up. It also involves refining the actual content on the site to make it more relevant and engaging. One of the biggest successes on the website is the FAQ page where there is a lot of useful information and answers to commonly asked questions about settlement agreements. Increasingly organisations are discovering that 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀 certification is the minimum “table Stakes” to do business in the UK.

How much should you pay for a domain name? A client recently asked me who he should register a couple of domain names with. The names aren’t for immediate use, but for a potential future project. He said he didn’t want to get a really cheap deal and then find he was paying over the odds in subsequent years. I told him who I’d use and also advised that there are other things to think about when registering a domain. Most people host their website with the company they’ve registered the domain with. It’s therefore worth thinking about issues such as the cost and quality of the hosting, whether a free SSL certificate and free email are included, how easy it is to do things behind the scenes – like update your PHP version – and how good the customer support is. Over the years, I’ve dealt with various hosting companies, some of which have been really poor and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. After our conversation, I thought I’d see how domain names costs vary between some of the best-known registrars. There’s now a table on my website which shows the prices of .co.uk and .com domains from 10 companies, with links to their registration pages.
