A promise was made to give 50 grants to innovative British businesses, but in the end only 25 were awarded. The notable criterion for eligibility was these innovative SMEs had to be female led. UPDATE: Innovate UK has reviewed their “priorities” and reversed this decision. https://lnkd.in/eUpEBZkS 1,452 female founders applied. And only 25 out of a promised 50 awards were made. Dare I ask, would this have been the case if it were not for female led businesses? Only 2p of every £1 of equity funding in the UK goes to female-founded businesses. If women started and scaled businesses at the same pace as men, it could add up to £250bn in economic benefits. And to make matters worse, Innovate UK has retrospectively amended the terms of the Women in Innovation award. Gaslighting, anyone?

Three weeks ahead of voting in UK General Election. The National Centre for Social Research last week published its latest report BSA 41: Five years of unprecedented challenges: The impact of the 2019-2024 Parliament on public opinion. It warns trust and confidence in the government has fallen back to where it was five years ago, a record high of 45% “almost never” trust governments to put the nation’s interests first, up from 34% in 2019. Broadly then, what does the report identify for the fall in confidence? 👉 Got Brexit done. Yet despite anticipating lower levels of immigration, net migration has increased to record levels. 👉 COVID. Forces the economy to shutdown placing huge demand on public spending. 👉 Russia invades Ukraine. A worsening rise to inflation most noticeably in energy costs but also triggering a rise of mortgage interest rates and inevitably declining living standards for many. 👉 Two Prime Ministers brought down. Johnson and Truss due to disregard to lockdown regulation and the 'mini budget' respectively. I believe, above all else, trust is the single greatest component for successful agency/client relationships. So what parallels might apply to organisations and their agencies? ✔ Agency pitch done. But do you still have access to senior leader experts in your agency? ✔ Budget spending demands. Are you consistently surprised by unavoidable budget increases? Is your agency operating as an advisor...contingency allowances, impact of decision making, etc. ✔ Delivering against promises. Is your agency consistently meeting expectations or falling behind? ✔ Ask why? Good is asking why. The opposite is said for guesswork and assumptions. ✔ No mystery. Are working collaboratively with your agency in an open and transparent way? In much the same way then public opinion is reshaping the course of this General Election, so it might as you evaluate the value of your agency relationship. Whilst working on GoPlugable we’ve often talked about our bootstrapping journey where we funded our first year of development almost exclusively through grants competitions and accelerator programs. And whilst we can’t win everything, with £150,000 of equity free funds raised in 10 months it’s fair to say we’ve had a pretty good run at it! I always recommend to startups to avail of the support out there and bootstrap for as long as you can, we’ve gotten support both locally and internationally and it definitely can be done. 💸 Part of what I love so much about being in the startup world is not only working on my own startup but also hearing what others are working on. I get quite a lot of messages from very early stage founders asking how we managed to build our platform and get it off the ground on bootstrapped funds - every founder I have the opportunity to help in some way has also taught me something. As always my inbox is open and I’m more than happy to answer any questions you have but I wanted to gauge interest for offering more in depth one hour calls to help you to be able to present your startup in the best way possible whether it be through an application programme, pitch deck, website or MVP. Things are always busy at GoPlugable so for a very small fee I can allocate more of my time to give this more in depth advice based on what you need help with most. Writing application forms and how to speed this process up when applying for many things at a time (we have this down to a fine art at GoPlugable!). 2. Let’s talk about funding your hot new venture - don't let the tail wag the dog...   Had a blast diving into areas commonly overlooked (for first time founders in particular) with some sharp Furman University students: ✅ Not all money is created equal. Know the basics like debt (traditional/lenders) vs. equity (venture capital/owners). Does it come with oversight? Advisors? Growth expectations? Does it mess up your cap table right out the gate and ruin follow-on funding? ☝ If this just blew your mind - do not pass go, do not collect $200 - study all of this first.   ✅ Obsess with the problem you’re solving and the market dynamics around it…please don’t word-vomit about all the nifty solution tech (at least not at first).   ✅ If you want equity funding/venture capital, don’t be an LLC, be a C-Corp.   ✅ Do you ACTUALLY have high-growth potential? I need serious FOMO levels of belief that your venture is the hockey stick I’m looking for. Hint: data helps.   ✅ If you're asset based (i.e. building, equipment, etc.), check out earlier stage debt-funding vehicles like SBA loans.   ✅ Align your funding strategy with your growth goals. For instance, equity funding = strap on your seatbelt and start the clock for a liquidation event. ✅ Align your funding strategy with your market context. For instance, if you're in the healthcare/tech space, check out non-dilutive federal grants to get started (SBIR, STTR, etc.).
