📢 We’re thrilled to announce the release of our CAF Annual Report for 2024, capturing a year of achievements, growth, and new initiatives aimed at lifting standards across the cleaning industry. This year is especially meaningful as CAF celebrated its 10th anniversary — a decade dedicated to fair, safe, and equitable working conditions for cleaners. 🎉 Some highlight’s from this year’s report include: 💡 CAF Portfolio Certification – In partnership with ISPT, we successfully piloted our Portfolio program in order to scale up CAF Certification. This included building on our Procurement offering and introducing our Portfolio Rating program, creating a new industry benchmark for labour rights and accountability. 🗨️ Direct Engagement with Cleaners – Together with the United Workers Union, CAF conducted 99 in-person meetings with over 1,000 cleaners. These discussions raised critical issues like excessive workloads, unsafe conditions, underpayment, and the impact of heat stress. 🙌 Celebrating 10 Years of CAF – Our anniversary event brought together industry stakeholders, cleaners, academics, trade unionists, and CAF staff to celebrate and reflect on a decade of collaboration and progress. Thank you to everyone who has supported CAF over the years. As a multistakeholder initiative, we rely on and deeply value the contributions of our partners and members in our efforts to advance working conditions for cleaners—now and into the future. Today is the world day for safety and health at work. In 1974 the UK introduced the Health and Safety at Work etc Act. Just 3 years later we recognized the power of trade unions in helping to support and challenge employers with the creation of the Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations. It took until 1996 to work out what to do in workplaces that did not have trade unions - a weaker set of regulations based on elected workplace representatives but without the resources and back up that our trade unions and the TUC, STUC, GFTU provide. When you go in to work checkout the "health and safety at work - what you need to know" and find out who is your health and safety representative. If the box is empty - ask why.

We have launched our mini-manifesto setting out the cleaning, hygiene and waste industry’s priorities to help create a resilient UK and the areas where we are seeking the next Government’s support to achieve this vital objective. The BCC is ready to work collaboratively with the new Government to ensure that cleaning and hygiene policy, law and regulation is directed specifically at preparing to protect public health both in advance of, and in the event of, another pandemic. We are calling for all political parties to embrace and support the mini-manifesto, which is directed at protecting the health and wealth of the nation. The key points are: · The urgent establishment of a joint Government/cleaning, hygiene and waste industry preparedness team to plan for public health emergencies. · Agreement between Government and industry on the minimum levels of cleaning materials, equipment and PPE that should both be held in reserve and be able to be manufactured rapidly in emergency situations. · In the event of another pandemic, Key Worker status must be bestowed upon cleaning operatives and on staff working in cleaning product supply and manufacturing. · Urgent consideration must be given to making cleaning staff eligible for the Skilled Worker Visa scheme. · Minimum standards should be agreed for the provision of cleaning and hygiene infrastructure across a wide variety of key venues. · A standard qualification for cleaning should be developed within the Apprenticeship Levy. · Government communications around hygiene in times of public health concerns or national emergencies should be clear, consistent, sustained, timely, relevant and specific. BCC Chair Delia Cannings said: “As a non-political trade body, we do not support any particular political party or candidate. Every political party needs to recollect the large number of lives lost and the significant impact on many families and society at large arising from the Covid-19 pandemic and commit to take steps to ensure lessons are learned and there is no recurrence.” Immediate Past Chairman of the BCC Jim Melvin said: “We represent the cleaning, hygiene and waste industry, which is worth nearly £60bn and is one of the largest and most important sectors in the UK. Our mini-manifesto is informed by our industry expertise and knowledge, and that of our members, with the aim of informing the next Government’s policies. It is essential that any incoming Government engages with us, listens to and acts on these recommendations.” #cleaning #government #manifesto

WorkSafe Victoria seems obsessed with Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs). HSRs are widely seen as supported or trained by trade unions which deters many employers from embracing OHS. A much better strategy is to focus on the core obligation for employers and workers to consult, engage and discuss OHS needs and solutions, regardless of HSRs. This strategy would reach more employers by cutting the perception of HSRs being trade union infiltrators. https://lnkd.in/gUy2qiQt

📢 Tip Allocation Update The hospitality sector has new tip regulations coming into effect on 1 October 2024. Key takeaways for employers: ➡️ 100% of tips, gratuities, and service charges must go directly to staff. ⚖️ Tips must be distributed fairly and transparently. 💰 Tips must be paid by the end of the month following receipt. 📝 Maintain a clear written policy on tip distribution and keep detailed records. From today, restaurants will be banned from withholding tips from staff under new rules. Over 2 million workers will now keep an estimated £200m in tips annually. While this is a win for workers, some fear restaurants may raise prices to offset costs. The law covers both cash and card tips, ensuring fairness and transparency in tip distribution. Employers must pass tips on without deductions, keep records, and can’t adjust wages based on tips. Most business owners will read this article and see the obvious point. Staff were being underpaid by the business, and the courts corrected that. However, looking closely reveals that Director Yi Ting Wang (known as Maxine Wang) is forced to pay penalties as both the Director AND as the organisation. This is an extreme case, but every day we hear employers say that their employees are great, "they are like family". This case shows why it is vital to have correct documentation to protect your staff and your business. Giving staff international vacations is nice but it does not make up for not fulfilling your responsibilities in an employees day to day entitlements. #business #compliance #wages #staff #penalties #hr
